The majority of hard working folks who shop at Wal-Mart depended on the department store's layaway department for not only school clothes or Christmas gifts but also for normal high cost everyday items. It is sad that it is gone.
When I was redoing my bathroom last year I went ahead and put all new towels, rugs, border, curtains and all the little accessories I needed on layaway so that they'd all be matching and there was no way I could purchase them outright. This was the only way I could do it as a single parent. Lord knows money never stretches far enough when you're a single parent.
When I think about all the school and Christmas layaways that we've used in the past, I miss layaway even more. I used the layaway for a big Christmas for my three children, 1.) I could make payments and 2.) Because it was well hidden until I choose to pick it up. Now that they are older they'd just find the layaway slip and go pick it up or something! Teens are very sneaky at times. Got to love the kids thought, sneakiness and all.
In all seriousness I so miss the convenience of Wal-Mart's layaway department. There is a way around it and this little secret came from my boyfriend who is a long standing Wal-Mart employee.
Chargeable Gift cards are sold at every Wal-Mart in the nation. Here's what you do to save money in a safe place so you don't spend it. Go buy a gift card for each child and put money on it when you can through the year. This way not a lot of money is coming out of your pocket when it's Christmas or school shopping time.
Heck I'd even go one better and say grab a few for each child, reserve one for school clothes and shoes and put about 30 bucks on the other card for them to spend on pencils, notebooks or whatever else they need for school. Kids will love it, and will learn about the values of money and best of all no more waiting in those crowded isles at peak shopping time for you.

Post a CommentRemoving layaway as an alternate payment plan for items purchased at Walmart, was a bad business move for Walmart.
With the economy in the shape it's in and unemployment on the rise, this move hurt not just the consumers but in the long run will hurt Walmart. If it hasnt already.
I depended on Walmart as my shopping saviour. It has everything I need, if not I can wait for sales, cut out coupons, and I used to be able to do layaway. But not any more. I was told wheile I worked at Walmart, that Layaway was being done away with because people purchased items on thei credit cards more so than they purchased using cash at the layway counter. Yes, there are alot of people who use a credit cards to make payments, purchase outright, and so on and so forth, but seriously folks, somewhere beneath all of that plastic, there is money... cold hard cash some where.
Walmart doing away with Layaway was and is a bad move and will cost them if it hasnt cost them already.
I think getting rid of lay-away is a crappy deal as well, but the rechargable gift cards are not a bad solution. :)
Made me really mad when they got rid of lay-away!
