Walruses Are Mammals

I find these mammals to be one of the most dangerous mammals on earth that's only if I was going by the way that look. Walruses are harmless they are sea mammals that you will find in the Artic you can always find them somewhere near the cold ocean water. The walruses spends alot of there time on land as well, but the cold ocean water is what they like most. Walruses can reach up to four thousand pounds and what I find amazing is that they breathe with their lungs instead of their gills. They grow to be at least nine to twelve feet long and are usually reddish brown in color. They have two huge tusks, which are their big teeth which that can be around thirty inches long. That sometime use their tusk as there protection for fighting. Walruses have blubbers which is a very thick layer of fat this type fat keeps them warm.

If you are ever near Canada or Greenland, Russia or even Norway or the Ellesmere Island you may happen to see a walrus cause these are some of the places where they live. Walruses can stay under water for about ten to fifteen minutes.Walruses can eat up to one hundred pounds of food daily they like to eat clams, starfish, crabs and mussels they sometimes fin there food with there whiskers by digging in the sand and mud. Walrus normally live together in groups this keeps them safe from the polar bears and the killer whales. As many as one thousand walruses can live together.

When you think of a cow you probably think of a four leg animal that give us milk, but that not the case female walruses are called cows and baby walruses calves. Walruses give birth in the spring time and they can live to be forty years of age. Did you know that a walrus, seals, sea lions are all pinnipeds which is a sea mammal that have flippers. The flippers are the paddle shaped parts that these mammals use for swimming. Walruses are the only mammals that have tusks. it take many years for a baby walrus (calves) to grow tusk. When baby walrus are born they weigh between one hundred and thirty to one hundred and fifty pounds. Walrus look so mean and tough, but they are very gentle mammals to humans. Know that walruses looks fearless, but are actually on of the most humble mammals just like seals maybe not as friendly like a seal but very humble.
