Walt Disney's Tangled Releases on DVD, Blu-Ray & Digital on March 29, 2011 -- Movie Review

Rapunzel Exchanges Her Prince for a Bandit & Other Changes

Walt Disney's "Tangled," the animated feature that takes tremendous liberties with the classic tale of Rapunzel, debuts as a 4-Disc Disney Blu-ray Combo Pack (3D Blu-ray + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy in a single package) on March 29, 2011. This is not your grandma's Rapunzel.

Tangled & Rapunzel -- Similarities

Growing up with a long braid as a child, I always loved the story of Rapunzel letting down her long hair from the tower where she was held by the wicked witch, waiting to be rescued by her prince. The Disney version features a hag, the tower, a handsome suitor, and Rapunzel with her long tresses, but there the similarities begin to taper off.

Tangled & Rapunzel -- Differences

The "improvements" in "Tangled" include catchy tunes about following your dream; floating lanterns; a high-spirited and emotional Rapunzel; a band of cutthroats and thieves; a con-artist bandit instead of a prince; and a law-enforcing, bloodhound of a horse named Maximus. While the excitement and a few catchy tuned should make the story more relevant to kids strung out on video games, is a princess with long hair in a tower enough to call it a movie about Rapunzel? Not unless Rapunzel two-timed the prince with a smooth-talking bandit! Apparently men don't need to aspire to being heroic -- any fast talker will do. But I digress.

I enjoyed "Tangled" for the movie's sake, and I loved Maxumus, the horse, but I mildly object to the way some of these beloved classic fairy tales are rewritten to the point only a few elements remaining. "Tangled" is a cute, colorful and satisfying tale... but the original fairy tale might have been better served had the princess in "Tangled" not been named Rapunzel.

Tangled -- Cast

"Tangled" features an amazing cast of voice talents including Mandy Moore ("A Walk To Remember," "The Princess Diaries") as Rapunzel, Zachary Levi (TV's "Chuck," "Less Than Perfect") as Flynn Rider, Brad Garrett (TV's "Everybody Loves Raymond," "'Til Death") as Hook Hand Thug, Donna Murphy ("Spider-Man 2," "The Fountain") as Mother Gothel, and Ron Perlman ("Hellboy," "Hellboy II: The Golden Army," "The City of Lost Children") as the Stabbington Brothers.

"Tangled" is family friendly and great fun for kids and adults alike, as long as the adults are not Rapunzel purists like I am. "Tangled" releases on multiple formats on March 29, 2011.

Tangled & Locks of Love

To celebrate the release of the DVD/Blu-ray combo of "Tangled" on March 29, a charity event in association with The Buzz Girls took place at the Bungalow Salon in West Hollywood to benefit Locks of Love. As reported in The Gift of the Magi - Donating Hair for Children in Need, Locks of Love provides hair pieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long term medical hair loss. Several celebrity hair-stylists offered up free haircuts to those who wished to donate their hair (or money) to Locks of Love.
