Wanchai Ferry Shrimp Lo Mein Review

The Food is Tasty, but High in Sodium

H.Rox
Recently, there was a two-dollar coupon for Wanchai Ferry Chinese food in the newspaper, so I decided to try it. I went to the grocery store freezer and picked out a bag of shrimp lo mein.

First, the pros in this review: Wanchai Ferry Shrimp Lo Mein is very easy to make, and it tasted very good.

Inside the Wanchai Ferry Shrimp Lo Mein bag, there are several smaller bags. First, you brown the shrimp in a skillet with a little oil. Then, you put the shrimp aside and throw in the vegetable pack, the sauce and a cup of water. You cook that on the stove and warm up the noodle pack in the microwave. Then, you cook everything together for a little while, and eat.

The whole process maybe takes 15 minutes. It's a lot easier than trying to make Chinese food from scratch.
When I've done that, it always seemed I needed a lot of special ingredients to make the sauce, and my food never really tasted like Chinese food. (Or, I should probably say the food I get at Chinese restaurants in New York. That may not taste like real Chinese food either.)

This, however, was delicious.

The only con in this review is--Sodium.

According to the packaging, each bag of Wanchai Ferry Shrimp Lo Mein has two servings and each serving has 1770 mg of Sodium. By comparison, the pretzels in my kitchen cabinet have 390 mg of sodium per serving. The American Heart Association says you should try to eat less than 2,300 mg of salt per day, less than 1500mg if you have high blood pressure.

To counter that, the next time I made it, I put in about a third of the sauce packet, since I figured that was where most of the sodium came from. The flavor was not quite as intense as the first batch I made, but still quite tasty.

The only other 'con' has to do with the carrots. Just a personal thing, but I don't particularly like cooked carrots and they are one of the main ingredients in Wanchai Ferry Shrimp Lo Mein. Fortunately, they are easy to pick out. I put in some green beans and mushrooms instead and the results were quite tasty.

When it comes to the shrimp, they were pretty good. Of course, you always want to have more than you get in something like this, but the Wanchai Ferry Shrimp Lo Mein had an adequate amount. There were 10 in the first bag and 9 in the second. Their consistency was good, not chewy, and their size was decent-a little bigger than the diameter of a quarter by my estimation.

Other nutrition information about Wanchai Ferry Shrimp Lo Mein, according to the bag, each serving "as prepared" has 510 calories, 18 grams of fat and 6 grams of dietary fiber.

Overall Review: While Wanchai Ferry Shrimp Lo Mein was delicious, I would recommend this product as an occasional treat with lots of vegetables added in and less sauce to try to keep the sodium content down.
