Wanchai Ferry Spicy Garlic Chicken a Winner

Good Eating Whether a Chinese Cuisine Lover or Not

L.L. Woodard
Prepackaged foods are often the go-to meals for busy people--or those who forgot to stop at the grocery store. While I prefer to home cook my meals from scratch, there are just times that prepackaged food is expedient. Even so, I want the taste and nutrition to be good. Wanchai Ferry hit that mark with their Spicy Garlic Chicken offering.

Wanchai Ferry Brand

The Wanchai Ferry brand is distributed by General Mills Sales, Inc. Wanchai Ferry's website tells the story of the origination of the brand name and the woman, Madame Chong, who established the Wanchai Ferry Peking Dumpling Company in 1985 after first having sold her dumplings from a cart in the Wanchai district of Hong Kong.

Wanchai Ferry Chinese Dinner Kit

The Spicy Garlic Chicken dinner kit is the first offering from this brand that I have tried. Everything you need for the main entree is contained in the attractive package except the meat. The picture display on the package is exactly what you can expect of the cooked meal.

When making this dinner, additional ingredients you will need are: 1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breasts or equal amounts of pork tenderloin or shrimp, if you prefer; 1 1/2 cup of water for rice; 1/3 cup water for sauce and 2 tblsp. vegetable oil.

Preparation: Pour the provided rice into a saucepan with the specified water. While the rice is cooking, cut your meat into 1-inch pieces. Next, in a small bowl or plastic food storage bag, empty the seasoned cornstarch mix provided and thoroughly coat the pieces of meat. Put the suggested portion of vegetable oil in a non-stick 10-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Carefully add the meat to the hot oil, stirring to ensure pieces are evenly browned for about 7 minutes or until meat is cooked through.

When meat is cooked through, reduce the heat to medium and stir in the provided sauce and additional portion of water. Drain the water from the bamboo shoots and water chestnuts, then add to the pan and stir. Simmer uncovered for 2 minutes or until hot.

Serve with or over rice.

Spicy Garlic Chicken Taste/Quality

I prepared the entree using chicken and found it to be wonderfully seasoned and fresh-tasting--no hint of box. For this particular dinner, you must like garlic to enjoy the flavors.

I was pleasantly surprised that this prepackaged meal met and exceeded my dining expectations. I would serve this to guests, if pinched for time.

Nutrition Information

One package of Wanchai Ferry Spicy Garlic Chicken provides 6 servings. Calories per serving, including the white rice is 280, with 60 of those calories coming from fat. The packaged food contains no cholesterol, but with use of the oil to cook, a serving provides 16 percent of the daily value (DV) of cholesterol and 16 percent sodium.

I was happy to learn the company uses no MSG in their product--something rare in prepackaged foods.

Bottom Line

This is a product I will buy again and will also be trying other dry dinner kits and the Wanchai Ferry frozen food dinners.

The Wanchai Ferry website provides coupons you can print out, plus menu and serving ideas.

I keep looking at my Wanchai Ferry coupons but was always afraid to try it, since prepackaged food is often under par. I'll have to try it now :)

Sounds right up my alley. I'm not getting your publication notices but found this checking back the old fashioned way. Good job!
