Have you ever considered an alternative career? Like, taking up the job of a Dental Assistant?

From now up to 2012, Dental Assistants are increasingly sought after, becoming one of the fastest growing vocations in that period of time.

But what is a Dental Assistant, you ask? Not to be confused with their better known associates, namely the Dental Hygienist or the Dentist, the Dental Assistant in essence is helper to both. The Dental Assistant will aid the Dental Hygienist when he cleans the patient's teeth, and he will support the Dentist while he performs dental procedures, such as filling cavities and bridging. As assistant to both, you will play various supportive roles, such as setting up the dental room for the dentist, performing and recording dental X-rays, as well as completing laboratory work. In any case, the Dental Assistant will see and participate in giving dental care to various patients first hand.

For the family person whom is concerned about how this occupation will affect his or her family life, Dental Assistants are paid reasonably well, working office hours - crucial for those who would spend quality time with the children and spouse. Furthermore, the Dental Assistant would receive perks such as free dental care for him or herself and the family. If you are worried about job security, fret not because your employer would be setting you up for courses and upgrades to keep you up to date with the relevant dental technologies and procedures, keeping you employable as a Dental Assistant.

To become a Dental Assistant, however, you must fulfill a few conditions. A Dental Assistant must enjoy working with people, due to the personal service you are required to give daily, not only to the patient, but to the dentist or dental hygienist as well. They depend on your service to give the customer what he or she needs, therefore they need as much help as they can get. Good communication skills would help a lot, as with most service industry jobs. Moreover, certification is required to be a Dental Assistant.

Most Dental Assistant certification programs would take about one year. However, the training period may vary from state to state, depending on the legislation regarding dental practice and healthcare services. The time period may be as little as three months, but which course to take would depend on how much training you as a potential Dental Assistant feel you need. Once you pass the Dental Assistant Examination for Certification, you are well on your way to being a personal tooth fairy to the people.

Tooth fairies aside, being a Dental Assistant can be challenging and rewarding. If you have a Samaritan's spirit, and want to relieve the suffering of those in dental discomfort, or if you passionately believe in the cause of healthy teeth, sign up as a Dental Assistant right away. Healthcare is a unique and less trodden side of the industry, and those who go there always come out with better hearts.
