There is a drive through path at Washington County Conservation Area where you can expect to see all kinds of wildlife. Whitetail Deer, rabbits, doves, and quail can be seen among the many acres of woods and the open fields. There are seven picnic areas where a person can enjoy a quiet lunch . Outdoor stoves and tables are available along with drinking water. You can also purchase a snack from the concession stand while the kids play on the playground equipment.
Washington County Conservation Area also has many acres where hunters can enjoy their sport. They can enjoy hunting whitetail deer, turkeys, doves, woodcock, raccoons, possums, rabbit, quail, skunks, fox, squirrel, and coyotes. Check out the Washington County Hunter Fact sheet for the all hunting rules and regulations. All hunter's must check in at the rangers station upon entering the Recreation Area.
If hunting is not your sport you can definitely have fun boating. The lake spans over 248 acres where two boat docks are available. Motorboats must not exceed 10 horsepower, and both boats and motorboats are available for rental. You can enjoy a quiet ride on the lake or engage in a peaceful day of fishing. Fisherman can have a chance to catch a largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, channel catfish or carp. Bait can be purchased at the concession stand near the boat docks.
Hiking and camping can also be enjoyed at this beautiful lake. There is a marked seven mile trail that runs around the lake, over a dam, and through the woods. Hikers can enjoy the beauty of nature and watch the many birds that reside at this haven. There are many locations to place your tent or trailer for a fun weekend of camping. Electricity and disposal is readily available for trailers, as is a shower building for those camping in a tent. A nice wooden cabin was added in 2006 .
Washington County Conservation Area is definitely a place to come and enjoy the beauty of nature. Whether you want to hike, fish, boat, camp, or hunt, this is a place you'll want to bring the entire family to. This Conservation Area is conveniently located in Southern Illinois right off of I-64.
