Want to Be Greek

Highlights of Being Greek

Mary Pat Withem
You've made the decision to be a Greek member but what are the few things you should think about before picking a particular organization? Here are some highlights of being in a Greek organization and understanding what you're getting into.

Community Service

One of the most important parts of being in a Greek organization understands what you're supporting. If you join an organization that supports Breast Cancer, and you oppose the research that research teams do for Breast Cancer then why would you join an organization that almost exclusively raises money for breast cancer? It's almost like saying your values and beliefs aren't important enough to you that you'd refuse to be a member of that particular organization.

Community service is part of the organizations' values and if you don't agree with community service as a whole then it's important to find an organization that does not focus their efforts mainly on community service. Some organizations would focus more on sisterhood/brotherhood and some other organizations focus more on philanthropy.

Philanthropy

Philanthropy is a big part of being a Greek member and it helps you prepare for if you're a big businessperson and want to be known for your philanthropic efforts just like Bill Gates and his wife. They're well known for giving money to people in time of need.

It's once again another thing to think about. If you agree more with community service than philanthropy then you're better fit with an organization that focuses more on the action than the money. Some organizations have a good balance between the two. It's not the end of the world if you don't like one but like another and are able to contribute more to the other one and other sisters can do the one that you don't do. It's called teamwork and that's something you'll face a lot in your organization.

Brother/Sisterhood

If you've never had any brothers or sisters, this is a great way to get some family while being in college and finding moral support. Some Fraternities/Sororities have a stronger bond than others. If you're one of those people that can get by just by knowing people and having that sort of connection then perhaps being in a fraternity or sorority is not your thing because teamwork and brother/sisterhood is very important.

When you are joining a fraternity/sorority you are going into this for life. That is unless you resign or are kicked out of the organization and believe me neither one is a good way to go. It's okay to resign for particular reasons but sometimes people frown upon that because it's important to think about these things before you join. There are unforeseeable issues that require people to leave and that's quite all right. I'm not saying resigning is the way to go if there are small problems and you've simply given up.

  • Brother/Sisterhood is for life
  • Philanthropy is when you donate money.
  • Community Service is when you are actively involved with helping others.
