Want to Remove the Download Restrictions in IE?

A Simple Registry Hack for Internet Explorer

TechTips
If you are anything like me you are constantly downloading files from the internet, I download new free-ware, games, movies, software patches, updates, etc...and windows IE has a limitation on the number of concurrent downloads you can have at any given time. If you aren't aware of the restrictions IE places on downloads, basically you can download two at a time and if you try for a third it will just sit there idling until one of the two finishes. There are two ways around this problem, one is a simple fix, open a new web browser go to the same site and start two more downloads, but this to can cause problems so I suggest the more advanced IE hack to get around this little issue.

So to accomplish this hack first I want to tell you that you will be editing your registry so you will want to be careful because the registry is sensitive and can cause problems with your system if you do the wrong thing. So first I recommend you backup you systems registry, I won't go into steps on how to do that but you can go to this website and it gives you details on how to backup a registry here.

Once your registry is backed up then we can proceed. When doing the modifications we will want to close all other programs just to ensure that there is nothing that will interfere with our changes we want to make. Now you will want to click on the Start button in the lower left corner of you window and go to the RUN command. It will open a small window with some text in a box and a couple of buttons. You will want to type REGEDIT in the text box and hit OK, this is going to open our registry, which is where we will be making our changes.

You will want to find the following registry key (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings) which can be done much like finding a file in you file directory. Simply choose the HKEY_CURRENT_USER and expand it with the small + sign, then Software, and continue until you are in the Internet Settings option.

Click on the Internet Settings key and in the far right window of the registry you will see some different looking options. You won't actually want to edit any of these you will want to go to the Edit menu at the top of the registry and then click NEW and DWORD, which will put a new DWORD value into the registry for you. You will want to rename the DWORD to MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server. Once you have renamed the DWORD you will want to double click on it and a new window will open for you with an option to change the value data and Base.

The value data should be set to 10, which is the number of connections we want to allow, and the Base should be set to decimal, when you are finished doing this press the OK button. Once you have done this we only need to do one more thing, repeat the prior steps, go to edit, new, DWORD and it will insert another DWORD into the registry, rename this MaxConnectionsPerServer and set the values the same as the last DWORD 10 and decimal. Once you have done this you can close the registry editor and now you can have up to ten connections at a time in IE. Go ahead and download to your hearts content.

Now this will make it so you can download more files at a time through IE, but remember that this is a hack and is not recommended by Microsoft and technically constitutes a violation of the Internet Standards, but it's not illegal and it will only help you to get files faster and easier.

It was nice of you to write an article on the fix for people who insist upon using IE, but I have an even better solution: download Firefox!
