Nine talented comedians from across Long Island performed Sunday at Governor's Comedy Club in Levittown, but perhaps the biggest ovation of the night was received by Wantagh resident Mary Monahan.
Monahan, who is fast making a name for herself as Wantagh's Funniest Mom, had the audience in hysterics despite being new to the stand-up comedy scene. All of the performers on the bill were recent graduates of Governor's Comedy College, an intensive eight-week course that teaches aspiring comedians the basics of public speaking, crowd management and stage presence. The course was taught by John Trueson, who has been a professional comedian for over two decades. Under Trueson's expert guidance, Monahan's raw talent was honed and crafted into excellence.
"I have the opportunity to be a stay-at-home mom," said Monahan. "I wanted to try something new, so I figured I'd give comedy a try. We had an eight-week course with John Trueson. He essentially helped us aspiring comedians overcome stuff like stage fright and found where we fit in as performers."
Governor's Comedy College culminated in a graduation show on July 26, so Sunday's performance was just the second time Monahan took the stage in front of a live audience and several jokes from her seven-minute performance were inspired by real-life events.
"My kids are a great source of entertainment," said Monahan. "I'm enjoying them and having a lot of fun. I find fun in anything. A lot of the material for my act comes from my experiences being a mom and being married. Making people laugh is a great thing."
