Wanting to Feel Good About President Elect Barack Obama

Legislation Supported by Obama When he was in the Senate

I Want to Get Behind the President Elect

I want to feel safe and secure and feel that President elect Barack Obama is the right person to be at the presidential helm. I am actively looking for proof of his leadership ability.

I searched the Library of Congress records for the 110th Congress (2007-2008) to find Obama sponsored legislation. I thought that seeing his legislative priorities would give evidence of his ability to make an impact on greater national security, a better economy, and better government overall. I wanted to find far-reaching Obama sponsored legislation as supporting evidence that President elect Obama will be a strong leader.

Finding Obama Sponsored Legislation to Feel Good About

A large part of Senator Barack Obama's legislative work seems to have been spent on resolutions for such issues as a commemorative stamp for Rosa Parks, recognition of achievements of blacks like Carl Stokes, honoring the life of an African-American chemist, honoring the lifetime achievements of Jackie Robinson, and the like. I don't mean to downplay the importance of the contributions of blacks in our nation's history. I do feel their achievements need to be recognized, but this type of senatorial expertise won't go very far in protecting our freedom or our security as a nation.

We must support our military and they have not gotten a fair shake in my opinion. I do appreciate Senator Barack Obama for sponsoring Senate Bill 117 on January 4, 2007. The bill is meant to improve benefits and services for Armed Forces members and veterans. Nothing further has been done on this bill been since it was sent to committee on the same day it was introduced.

I do also believe that we must reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Mr. Obama introduced Senate Bill 133 to address alternative fuels, new technology, and other measures aimed at reducing the need for foreign oil. This Bill was introduced January 4, 2007. No further action was taken after it was referred to committee on that same day.

We have to keep our elections legal and our right to vote protected. Senator Obama sponsored Senate Bill 453 in January of 2007. This bill would make it illegal to knowingly deceive a voter with regard to the time, place, or manner of conducting any federal election. It also addresses deceptive practices concerning voter qualifications and eligibility and seeks to make it illegal for anyone to keep a person from voting and/or from voting for the candidate of his/her choice. On October 4, 2007, the bill was put on the Senate Legislative Calendar. That was the last action on the bill.

Another piece of admirable Obama sponsored legislation is Senate bill 692 in February of 2007. It is aimed at establishing a law requiring the Secretary of Veterans Affairs (VA) to develop and carry out a Hospital Quality Report Card Initiative, requiring at least semiannual reports on the effectiveness, safety, timeliness, and efficiency of VA hospitals. It was referred to committee on the same day it was introduced and further action has not been taken.

I saw a few other pieces of legislation that Senator Obama worked on, like the Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act of 2006, that helped me to see that his heart is in the right place. I also saw Obama sponsored legislation that worries me. I won't discuss those bills here because that is not the object of my article. My aim here is to find positive things to write about.

Let Me Hear from Barack Obama Supporters

I did not vote for Senator Barack Obama for president. I was very surprised and disappointed when he won the presidency. However, he will be the next president of the United States. He was elected by my countrymen and I intend to honor and support him to the best of my ability.

I would much rather be happy than right. That is why I started looking for proof of our president elect's ability to lead. I am still looking. I thought this article might inspire Obama supporters to point out important Obama sponsored legislation that I have not yet found. Please don't tell me about promises he has made or lofty rhetoric he has spoken. I am looking for accomplishments that he has made that would indicate that he is a capable leader. I am sure there must be some important legislation that he has authored, and that has been passed into law, that I have overlooked. I really need some evidence of any kind that he is capable of strong and wise leadership so that I can feel proud, safe, and optimistic about the future.

all of these politicians are sales people. i think that obama is an injection of new blood into the political mix. he is not rich at all. his house is very modest and in a very regular neighborhood. he has don a lot here in the chicago area since the mid 1980s. he made political participation a good thing to do. no matter which way you voted, you have to admit that this political season was informative and kept up a nice public debate. all of these guys make lofty promises that no one could keep. as long as he can inspire the electorate to some form of action to take care of things at home we will be alright. being from the chicago area, obama's rise is incredible. just four short years ago, hardly no one knew him out side of the south side of chicago. i like how he is getting right in there and getting his team together. i think the country will benefit from the obama administration. he is the most global president that we have ever had.

Great to see someone thinking for themselves when it comes to political issues and not being caught up in some sort of mindless frenzy.

You wrote from the heart and I can tell you are a class act..what a difference from those demonizing President Bush..the Obama supporters can learn from this. I hope they respond...just a quick note and I do share your sentiment about supporting the president..however..as a member of the 48 % percent that didn't vote for the president-elect..I know I did my research and I am confident in saying you were not wrong in your assessment..regardless if Obama turns out to be successful for the nation...your vote was a righteous one.. Obama cannot prove us "wrong" he can however abandon the negative policy decisions that he has made in the past and promised to make in the future..those that we won't delve into here..in the pursuit of keeping it positive ;-) Enjoyable read.
