Warcraft III Guide - How to Properly Use the Human Race

Jerry
As far as I'm concerned, every race in Warcraft III is quite even. However, it appears as if almost everyone prefers to go undead or orc. Most people tend to avoid human, and night elf are quite popular as well. Why is it that no one likes human?

For the longest time, I preferred to use races other than human because they seemed weak in most senses. What I didn't realize, was how powerful all of the unites of the human race are. In this article, I intend to outline the best units, as well as general strategies that are effective with humans.

Let's start with heroes.. The human heroes are all quite great, some just happen to be better for different styles of play and units that you'll be using in the long run. If you plan on going melee, I would get the paladin or the mountain king. The mountain king has really high damage and is great for taking down units because of this. I personally prefer the paladin, which can heal and grant armor to nearby land units. I always get the aura first for creeping, and maximize that fast if I'm going melee ground units, because the benefits are huge later on. The arch mage is good for creeping because of summon, as well as rushing. The bloodmage is awesome because of his abilities, he does okay in just about all forms of play. I still recommend the paladin for most cases because he's the easiest to keep alive while in battle, and his aura is awesome.

The basic human units are footman, and soon after you can get riflemen. If you're planning on creeping, footman are awesome. They have extremely high armor for their gold cost, and work great for creeping because of this. Riflemen are higher damage and if you're going ranged in the long run, I'd recommend producing these over footies.

In my opinion, the best human units are gryphons, siege engines, and knights. Knights have extremely high armor, hit points, and damage. They're some of the best melee units in the game because of this. They can usually stand up to a bear or even a tauren! They're great for attacking, creeping, etc. Gryphons are another one of the best units in the game, they're great because they're air and can attack both air and land. The damage they can do is quite high, and is magic so it does more damage to units and heroes.

Siege engines work almost completely differently. In fact, siege engines are the single best units for taking down buildings in the game. They're awesome for attacking bases because of their extremely high damage, and extremely high armor. Their only defect is that they can't attack enemy ground units. However, fully upgraded and in numbers, these things can take down bases in less than a minute.

Siege engines are great for countering. If you're on a team game, like 3v3 or 4v4, your allies will greatly appreciate you for getting these tanks. Have your allies attack a base, wait for enemies to Town Portal to that base in attempt to defend their allies, and then counter attack another base, further away with your tanks. This will greatly discourage your enemies, and if the fight draws on long enough you may have enough time to completely wipe out two players.

Another effective way to use siege engines is to teleport into the enemie's base with the arch mage, or use zeppelins to transport them directly to the town hall (or main building otherwise), and immediately take down the most important building of your opponets. This will greatly discourage them and keep them from producing powerful units for a very long time.

If you're more interested in producing units, I recommend going knights or gryphons. If you're going knights, make sure to back up with priests, since the knights can stand up and take the hits while the priests stay back and keep them healed. This can be a lethal combination if you get a few priests that can cast inner fire.
However, if you don't have a partner that can get anti-air units, get gyrocopters for backup against enemy air units.

Good luck playing with these strategies, hopefully they allow you to realize the true power of the human race in Warcraft III, both Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne!
