Wardrobe Needs for the Male College Student

Shipping Them Off to College A to Z

Dorm room closets are extremely limited, yet guys still seem to have trouble filling the space. The problem is that most young men have no idea what clothes they should bring to college. This guide will help you fill your dorm closet with enough clothes to last for 2 weeks, at which time you should really do your laundry.

Underclothes: Get enough underwear and undershirts to last 2 weeks, plus a few extras. The same goes for socks.

Shirts: The shirts you wear at college will be based on your personal style. Many young men tend wear a combination of t-shirts, and dressier shirts each day, sometimes layering them. You should bring 20 casual shirts in a combination of graphic tees, polo shirts, and patterned dress shirts.

Pants: Guys can get away with wearing a pair of pants at least twice before washing, so six pair of pants is plenty. Four pairs of jeans and two pairs of khaki's or other casual pants will suffice. Also bring 2 pairs of khaki or plaid shorts for warm days.

Formal Wear: You will need one crisp white dress shirt for business and dressy occasions.
You will also need a pair of dress slacks and a business suit.

Coats, jackets and sweaters: Bring a casual blazer to college, along with a couple hoodies, and a waterproof jacket. You will want at least sweaters for cold days. They can be pull over or cardigan style. Also bring a winter coat with removable liner.

Workout Clothes: Basketball shorts, old t-shirts, track suits or sweatsuits, will be great for working out, hanging out, or even sleeping. Bring at least 4 sets. Bring more if you exercise daily.

Sleepwear: Drawstring sleep pants, basketball shorts, and t-shirts make excellent college sleepwear.
Shoes: Guys need five basic pairs of shoes for college. They include cold and rainy weather boots, dress shoes, sandals, athletic shoes, and a pair of casual shoes.

Accessories: A couple of ties can come in handy. Also consider bringing a couple neck scarves and hats. Don't forget to bring a few belts and a pair of sunglasses.
