Two years from now you are going to be flipping TV channels one sleepless night: CSI rerun. Flip. Lose 50 pounds in 5 days. Flip. Buy this useless product for only 19.99. Flip. CSI Miami rerun. Flip. That's when it is going to happen...
Some station is going to be airing old episodes of Friday Night Lights; and you are going to watch it because you really don't need any of that acne cream Judith Light is still trying to sell you. After witnessing some of the best acting, writing, direction, music, and characters ever seen on TV, you are going to need more. It's only natural.
Except the only thing you are going to be getting is heartbreak once it's realized you can't get more of Friday Night Lights because the show was cancelled in its second season. All those other shows that you loved, but were cancelled too soon, are going to flood your mind. And you're going to spend the rest of the night pouting about how all the good shows are always cancelled.
But when you remember how you were watching a bad American Idol spin-off instead of supporting Friday Night Lights, that is when the self hate is going to overwhelm you.
So do yourself a favor, and give Friday Night Lights a chance while still possible. Save a show; save yourself. Sounds good to me.
I know what you're thinking. It's too late. Friday Night Lights is already in its second season; how will I catch up? Good news...
It's Not Too Late
Season one of Friday Night Lights is out now on DVD (here). Test it out by renting the first disc for a few bucks. Or buy the complete season on DVD for under $25. That's a bargain for 22 episodes. And for a limited time, Universal is also offering a money back guarantee.
After you marathon season one of Friday Night Lights, catch up easily with season two online at NBC (watch here). Watch full episodes of Friday Night Lights for free online whenever you feel like it at NBC.
Then catch the rest of the season Friday nights at 8 pm central time on NBC.
Not sure you want to catch up on Friday Night Lights though? Maybe you are wondering why should I watch a show about a high school football team when I couldn't care less about football? Easy...
Friday Night Lights Is More Than Football
The television show is essentially a character-driven drama. It's not necessary to like football to enjoy Friday Night Lights any more than one has to want to be a doctor to enjoy Grey's Anatomy.
Plus, as the characters get more developed and story lines get more complex, football plays less of a factor. Everyone needs to watch at least the first four episodes before writing Friday Night Lights off.
And anyways, once people have bonded with the characters, they won't be able to help but care about the game. But it's not about football, it's about the characters who play the game.
So don't let your dislike of sports be the reason you miss out on one of the best shows on television.
Football not the reason? Maybe you keep changing the channel after Deal or No Deal on Friday nights because you're under the impression that Friday Night Lights is only meant for teenage boys? Not true, not true...
Friday Night Lights Is Not Just For Teen Boys
I won't lie; the show does have many of the required aspects of high school dramas that teens enjoy. Except Friday Night Lights does it better. There is more truth and heart on Friday Night Lights than most other high school shows like Dawson's Creek or The OC. The fact it is meaningful means adults can enjoy the drama as well.
Also, the center of Friday Night Lights is Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) and his wife Tami (Connie Britton). They deal with issues of marriage, career, parenting, family, and romance that more mature audiences can appreciate.
So don't let bad marketing keep you from enjoying one of the best shows on TV.
The only other reason I can think of that you may be hesitant to give Friday Night Lights a try is because perhaps you did not like the movie? Well...
TV Show Is Better Than The Movie
If someone did not like the movie Friday Night Lights, I do not know whether they would like the TV show. I loved the movie just as I love the tv show. But I know the television show is better than the film. The TV characters are more likeable, sub-plots are stronger, and the appeal is broader.
Friday Night Lights has not been cancelled yet; but it is in danger if its ratings do not pick up soon. If you haven't given the show a chance, what are you waiting for?
