There are warning signs that you should be aware of in terms of knowing when to quit your job. Knowing how to recognize these warning signs will help you move forward with your career. Change is not always a bad thing; in fact, it can be quite good.
I don't need to tell you that the economy is bad right now and unemployment is high. If you think you need to change your job and company, then start looking in your free time so that you can continue to pay the bills until you find a new job. If you can afford to quit your job while pursuing other opportunities, then go for it!
The best thing to do if any of these warning signs are present, is to try and figure out exactly what's making you unhappy. By defining what's wrong, you'll know what you don't want from your next position.
Tardiness
Are you showing up for work late every day and late to attend meetings during the course of the day? This could be an indication that you're not happy anymore in your current position. Is it the position or the people you work with that are making you unhappy? If it's the position, it may be time to talk to your boss about doing something else, but if it's the people you work with, then you need to think about quitting your job and working for another company.
Company Profits Are Decreasing
Are you stressed that you may not have a job tomorrow morning? This kind of stress can be severe enough to make you sick, I mean physically and emotionally sick. Worrying about whether or not you'll have a job tomorrow will make you unhappy. If you have a good relationship with your boss or the owner, then talk to them. Tell them your concerns and find out where the company is heading and what they're doing to make it more profitable. If you don't have a good relationship with a top executive, then this is a definite warning sign to move forward by quitting your job.
You've Outgrown Your Job
Now that you've been doing your job faithfully for awhile and you've learned all the ropes and tricks, maybe it's time for advancement. When your job is no longer challenging and you want more or different responsibilities, this is another warning sign that it's time to move forward to avoid burnout. Talk to your boss about it and if you work in a large company, you can talk to others in another department about what their job entails to determine whether or not you want to transfer to that department. Smaller companies have less positions and it may be time to quit your job.
Lack of Advancement Opportunities
There are companies that have little advancement opportunities or maybe they've put a freeze on advancement opportunities within the company. This happens quite frequently and you need to decide if it's worth staying around and waiting out the freeze or if you need to move on. If the company has no advancement opportunities that you're interested in, then it's time to move forward.
Your Responsibilities Are Being Taken Away
Are some of your responsibilities being given to someone else without adding different responsibilities to you? This is done for one of two reasons: Either the company is not doing well financially and thinking about laying off certain positions or your boss is trying to get rid of you and is incompetent in firing you so he or she will take some of your job responsibilities away hoping that you'll get the message and leave on your own. Either way, it's time to leave.
Personality Differences With The Boss
This is a very common issue in the workforce and it stinks. The best thing to do is to try and transfer to another department within the company if you like working for that company. If you have a Human Resources department, you may want to talk to them about the situation and see if other positions are available. Otherwise, leave.
