Warren Buffet Behind A-Rod's Return to the New York Yankees?
Buffet Tells A-Rod to Leave Boras Out of Talks
Baseball executives, the MLB front-office and fans alike were furious that Scott Boras stole the limelight from the Boston Red Sox on the night they won the 2007 World Series. Boras upstaged the Red Sox with his untimely announcement that Alex Rodriguez would opt out of the remaining years of his Yankee contract and become a free agent. The Yanks, in turn, announced they wouldn't negotiate with Rodriguez once he choose to opt out of a deal that would have paid him nearly 100 million. Previous to hearing about opting out of his contract, the Yankees had offered A-Rod a contract extension that would've kept him in pinstripes for at least 7 more years.
Instead, Boras choose to test the free agent waters, thinking that the bidding wars would begin for his probably 2007 MVP player. Boras was very wrong. Many of the teams that are big spenders were either already set at the positions that A-Rod plays and or were truned off by the Boras/A-Rod combo. The Red Sox had looked to be a good choice as aging 3rd sacker, Mike Lowell, was at the end of his contract and was looking for a 3-5 year deal that would take him through the end of his career. Since Boston isn't known for signing aging players to long-term deals, it seemed to many that the Sox might be A-Rod's new home.
Unfortunately, the Red Sox weren't very happy with being upstaged on the night they clinched their World Series victory and they were still a bit leery of Boras. The Sox once thought they had A-Rod signed, lock, stock and barrel and were stung badly by A-Rod as he decided to play the Sox vs the Yankees and NY came up with a better deal. Too many team remembered how Boston was burnt by A-Rod and steered clear of making a decent offer and only the Dodgers should any interest in the potential HOFer.
Enter in Warren Buffet. A-Rod had befriended Buffet and had sought his advise about approaching the Yankees. Buffet advised A-Rod to try to set-up a meeting with the Steinbrenners and leaving his agent , Scott Boras, out of all talks.
Through some intermediaries the meeting was set and A-Rod pleaded with the Yankee brass that he didn't have the feelings about the organization that his agent had and he wanted to remain a Yankee. Despite losing 21 million dollars from the Texas Rangers who A-Rod was acquired from, the Yankees have been reeling from some unfavorable press since Joe Torre was all but let go. They listened to A-Rod and his wife portray that they loved NY and Alex wanted to finsih his career in pinstripes.
Whatever it was, the deal is all but done for A-Rod and the Yankees and it looks like A-Rod will take the field in a Yankee uniform again next season. With A-Rod you can never know, but it sure looks like Mr. Warren Buffet is to thank if A-Rod is back.
