WARRING with the WASP

A Strange Way of Keeping Them at Bay

Carol Khela
If you are anything at all like me, you do not like wasps and yellow jackets. Personally, I do not understand why they were created at all. Bees I could understand, but not those menacing creatures. I am always dodging them from every angle. Every time I open my front door, there they are. When I open my back sliding doors, there they are. It appears that there is some sort of conspiracy, I am sure. They know I hate them and they just don't care. I am sure that while other flying things are sleeping at night, these guys are up planning their next attack. What really stinks is that I love being outdoors. I love nature trails and hiking, swimming, boating and fishing. I like planting flowers in my garden and always plant a vegetable garden each year. I just don't understand why they feel the need to supervise me when I do get outside and plant. One hot summer, probably about 6 years ago, I was preparing my vegetable garden and I had just put a post up with rope to section off an area. I was feeling a little tired and decided to put my hand on top of the post to rest for a second. As luck would have it, I had actually placed my hand on top of a wasp that was sitting on the post, hoping to rest also, and it stung me.

Being outside is not my only threat of an attack, however. It happens that my office is located on the top floor of a wooden building that used to be a barn. Every summer we seem to attract all the wasps inside that building. Most of them go straight up to my office though and disregard all the other offices on my floor. I finally had just about had it when someone made a suggestion that seemed absurd at the time. I was to take a zip lock bag, fill it with water and put a penny in the bag. Then I was to hang the bag near the area that the wasps seemed to gather. Apparently, the wasps view this contraption as a spider's nest and they do not want to go near it. They are afraid of getting caught in the supposed "web" and avoid the area completely. Well I decided to put it to the test. About 1 week ago, I tried this and hung it on the skylight window over my head. The wasps usually go to that location for their daily coffee break. Much to my surprise, they have not come in my office at all this entire week! Could it be that this actually works? That would be too amazing. There are no pesticides involved, no costs to speak of and it is pet and children friendly. If this really does the trick, I will be putting them all over my house!
