Was Anoop Desai's April 14 American Idol Performance Good Enough?

Susan Ayers
In an unusual turn of events on tonight's American Idol, Anoop Desai puts on a really good performance during Song's from the Movies week singing '(Everything I Do) I Do It for You' from Robin Hood. After completely ignoring tonight's guest star Quentin Tarantino's suggestions to rough it up a little bit, which I took to mean "sound more like Bryan Adams than Anoop Desai," Anoop came out with a very smooth and polished, on-key rendition. Yet he hardly 'killed it' like Tarantino predicted he would.

Staying true to what we've seen week after week, Anoop again had trouble making an audience connection. He sang a lovely song and that was about it. What must have been really disappointing for Anoop was that, yes he managed to raise the bar only to have it come crashing down on him in the form of Adam Lambert who followed him in the lineup. I'm guessing that nobody wants to be anywhere near Lambert - he's just that good. And tonight he was the superstar and Anoop was merely the opening act. Any lingering love felt for Anoop was immediately quashed when Lambert started performing his incredible rendition of 'Born to Be Wild.'

There is good news, though, for Anoop fans - you know - the ones who go Anooooop and sound like they're booing. Note to Anoop fans - that move will forever only work for Springsteen. But the good news is that there were other just as forgettable performances tonight by the usual suspects Matt and Lil. Even Kris managed to under-whelm me with his obscure song from the movie 'Once.'

If I were Anoop and I managed to squeak through to next week (highly doubtful) I would work on two things. One, I would fire my stylist as whoever chose that nightmare of an outfit deserves to be among the masses on the unemployment lines today. Second, I would really work on trying to connect to the audience at a much deeper level. In reality, the former might be much easier for Anoop at this point in the competition.

Okay this is funny. Anoop wasn't just GOOD ENOUGH, he was the BEST on Idol that night. He sang with perfect pitch, soul and depth, which a lot of the remaining contestants don't do, some shout their heads off and get buttered with sugary comments, just because the judges are in love with them. He could've/can win Idol if the judges were to switch gears and primp him up as much as Lambert/Iraheta.

    Susan,
I have to assume that you are not all about music! In your case it definitely seems to be style over subsatance! Anoop was spot on tecnically and as a performer...you seem to be very biased against Anoop for some reason. Examine yourself please! :)

He's out of his league compared to who? Adam Lambert deserves to be the American Idol, i won't argue that point. If Danny Gokey isn't allowed to scream through an entire song he doesn't even sound average. Lil has been horrid each and every week. Allison, same as Gokey. Matt is average and occasionally slightly above average. Kris Allen has his looks, that's about all.

Vocally, Anoop is behind Lambert and that's it. As for making a connection, maybe we aren't hearing the same thing. The crowd loves him, each and every week, again, he's 2nd to Adam in that category. Maybe he isn't making a connection with certain judges, but in terms of the live audience, he seems to have their full support every time he takes the stage.

Well, thanks. It's the hat :)

You have some hearing problems if you think the other singers are better than him except for Adam. Although, you're still hot lol.

I just think Anoop lacks an audience connection and I have said that in all my articles but please believe me - nothing to do with anything except I think he is just out of his league as far as some of the others go. He looks great - could use a little help on the outfits tho. I'm really happy we have a diverse group again this time.

Seems like writer is an Anti-anooper. Who has a technically correct vocals after Adam in competition? I think its Anoop.
But seems like some people cannot come out out of looks, dressing and race in America

OMG! Anoop was good but he is not even in the same league as Adam! Adam Rocked it again tonight the only thing Annop can sing well are ballads and if we compare this performance tonight with mad world from last week... no contest. Adam wins hands down. Why is it that people seem to complain when Adam mixes it up do the want the same old boring ballads and Hokey Gokey growling? Well, I don't... Go Adam!

I disagree with the writer. After Anoop sang, Adam looked like a throwback to the days of Ozzie and other rockers who performed to crowds who were stoned and could care less how he sounded. I'd take Anoop's music over Adams any day.
