Was Barbara Bush Speaking for Bush Family About Sarah Palin on 'Larry King Live' or Was This Just Another Babs' Blooper

Translated Text of Bush's Message to Palin: "You're Beautiful, but Stay in Alaska"

Nancy Tracy
Barbara Bush must have great tasting feet because the former first lady and mother of the previous president may have put one of these appendages in her mouth again, this time on "Larry King Live." While chatting with Larry on tonight's episode of his eponymous chatfest, Barbara Bush said of Tea Party darling Sarah Palin, "I think she's very happy in Alaska, and I hope she'll stay there."

Who knows whether Bush was talking out of school or deliberately sending a message to mainstream Republicans (similar to that of Karl Rove) that the Bushes do not see Palin as presidential material? But given her colorful record for making cringe-worthy off-the-cuff statements, it is possible that Barbara Bush's comment flew out of her mouth as unintentionally as a stray bit of food.

So, was Barbara Bush deliberately dissing Sarah Palin or was this just another one of Babs' verbal blunders? Here are some other well-known Barbara Bushisms to help you decide:

Describing then vice-presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro, Bush said, "I can't say it, but it rhymes with rich."

After Hurricaine Katrina, Bush shared this insight about the displaced residents of New Orleans, "What I'm hearing which is sort of scary is that they all want to stay in Texas. Everybody is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway so this (sound of Barbara chuckling)-this is working very well for them."

About Bush-family nemesis Bill Clinton, the former first lady said, "Clinton lied. A man might forget where he parks or where he lives, but he never forgets oral sex, no matter how bad it is."

Given Barbara Bush's proclivity for speaking frankly, it is likely she meant to send a strong message to Sarah Palin to stick to her new media career and stay the heck out of Washington.

Ah, foot in mouth disease. So many of us suffer from it. But then, what's the difference between foot in mouth disease and the truth?

I'd have to agree with Barbara - does that surprise you? As crucified as she's been by the press, as well as the fact that she'd never pick up the pro-choice women's vote, Palin has no chance of winning. I'm not sure the Republicans are yet showing us who they have up their sleeve to try to beat Obama in 2012.

Who cares why? I think Sarah Palin needs to hear how unfit she is for the White House from as many prominent Republicans as possible, so that she can't sinply pass off all the criticism as partisan sniping.

Great article, Nancy! Seems to me the senior Mrs. Bush has always spoken her mind. Blunder or not, brought a smile to my face.

Whether it is the opinion of the rest of the clan or not, it is the considered opinion of many in the Republican Party. Especially those who consider her an idiot with good people skills...

Well, at last: one good thing about that whole dreadful family. (I live in Florida; we had to put up with little bro' Bush as governor.)
