Was Jesus Christ a Liberal? 7 Indications Strongly Suggest He was Not

Marty K.
So often, in discussion groups, a progressive religious person will say, "But Jesus was a liberal." This is usually stated when trying to counter a point in a debate. Many people have seen pictures of Christ on the Sunday school wall and it looks like a feminized character, or someone with a sunken face. There is an image of him being a weak pacifist who resembles a hippy who didn't believe in violence. Also, people perceive the example of feeding many people as being liberal, for some strange reason.

It seems that many people can only envision and accept a weak, feminized version of Jesus or else they have to believe in a complete phony such as Santa Claus. Many folks apparently gloss over the many scriptures that indicate Christ was masculine, strong, and principled - the furthest description of what we presently recognize as a liberal.

Let's take a look at why Christ could not be considered a liberal by today's standards:

1. Liberalism is a Mental You-Know-What

Liberalism as we know it has now been recognized as a mental problem by many prominent psychiatrists. People who are not doctors, however, can still distinguish between the dysfunctional state manifested by liberals and the sound mind and character of Jesus, along with the wisdom he expressed and the miracles he performed.

2. Jesus Gave in the Proper Way, but Did Not Debilitate People

Although Jesus believed in giving at the proper time, he did not believe in the liberal ideology of robbing the productive members of society to feed the idle.

3. Rebuke of the Scribes, Pharisees and Sadducees

I believe the type of person who views Jesus as a liberal has to be in denial beyond belief. They must be mentally blocking out the scriptures where Jesus scolds the scribes continuously, calling them hypocrites, a brood of vipers and other suitable terms with strength and authority.

Liberals don't do that. Liberals hold hands, they sing songs, they light candles and they accept everyone as they are, unconditionally. The motto of liberals is: "If it feels good, do it."

4. The Moneychangers Thrown out of the Temple

The tables of the moneychangers were overturned, and Jesus then drove them out of the temple. This manly action is probably dismissed more than the verbal rebuke of the religious leaders that was mentioned above. It appears that few are able to accept that Jesus doesn't match their idea of a liberal peacenik.

5. "Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword."

This is another saying of Jesus that is apparently overlooked when maintaining that he was a liberal. Liberals would not tend to think or act like this in today's world and they would not make such a statement. Furthermore, they usually don't believe in the principle behind the statement, which is division. They want a world where everyone, good and evil lives together and simply "gets along." Many of them don't even believe there is such a thing as a conflict between good and evil.

6. Christ Would Not Want to Remove God from Society

Most liberals are always demanding a "separation of church and state," even though it doesn't appear in the U.S. Constitution. They want to have a secular society where God does not live in our midst, and his laws are often set aside in favor of what feels great and the party animal mentality.

7. The Unlikelihood that Jesus Would Support the Liberal Causes of Today

Here are some of the issues of today Christ would be highly unlikely to support, even according to most liberals, themselves. Abortion, Gay Marriage, Excessive Taxation, Premarital Sex, and Drive-Thru Divorce are several that most agree he would not accept.

I honestly believe that Jesus Christ would be critical of most liberals and their causes in this day and age and that it's neither accurate nor reasonable to sustain that he, himself was a liberal.

  • Many can only accepted a feminized version of Christ or a complete phony such as Santa Claus.
  • Jesus often corrected people.
  • It is not very llikely that Jesus would support the liberal causes of today.

Marty, you're up to no good again. You can shill for a few Republican bucks today, but I see all and never forget. And yes, I am a leftist. It's my father's wish. He designed all of us to be leftists, but somehow the incubator got contaminated with the right wing gene. Now we have to put up with conservative ignorance and intolerance. Perhaps my father is trying to teach us patience.

Steve, what exactly is "fallacious," and why, because you say so and I haven't depicted the PC Jesus? The examples I gave indicate he was more of a conservative than you probably care to believe. Now, we understand that liberals want to believe that he was one of their own instead being a shining example of what they're not and a contrast to their madness. We thank you, however for your arguments based on personal declarations and attacks against me.

What a bunch of fallacious garbage! The truth is Jesus was a liberal, and liberals want what Jesus wanted. The only thing that uniquely sets today's liberal ideals apart from what Jesus advocated, is that we want an egalitarian system of government. I'm sure that if Jesus were alive now living in the US, he would be a liberal but opposed to our divisive bi-partisan system.

Because I don't truly care what you think, and I doubt you have the critical thinking skilled needed to understand the fallacies in your arguments I won't even take the time to dissect them. However, I have to ask, is the cognitive dissonance in your hyperbole intentional or because you lack the ability to form a coherent thought?

Nothing like Christian Republicans getting upset that I am not something that they are.

I am Liberal deal with it.

Larry, you say my arguments are "weak and not well developed." However, you have not presented any counterarguments at all. Liberals are characterized by standing for the worst causes known to mankind, because they are mentally challenged and dysfunctional. Jesus was a man who was for the most part aligned with what conservatives defend today, such as the right to life, generalized common sense, ect.

Your arguments are weak and not well developed. Jesus was a Liberal.

I would like to see #4 happen today! You are soooo one of my favorites now.

"Even as an atheist liberal (and many are not atheistic) I have morals, values, and intelligence. Much more so, in fact, than many of my purportedly Christian friends.".......David, if you have morals, values and intelligence, you might not be an atheist OR a liberal deep down, even though you apparently believe yourself to be both. It is true that there are a lot of people who call themselves Christians, but are wolves in sheep's clothing.

David, thank you for participating and expressing yourself according to your right of freedom of speech, as I am doing. That is where I "get off," in answer to your question. You ask for sources, and if I were using material other than what is my own, I would have ALREADY listed the sources, according the rules of Associated Content. Hence, the sources spring forth from my own observations in life, with character references of being a sensible and reasonable person. Common sense plays a major role in my writings. The evidence that what I say is true is that the VAST MAJORITY of people agree with me, and this places my credibility beyond a reasonable doubt, similar to the verdict requirement in our legal system. Of course, there will always be those who disagree, but that's life. If I were to try to please everyone, that would place me on the level of many politicians and I don't want to go there. Again, thanks for taking part in this discussion.

Where do you get off representing liberals as a bunch of hedonistic, mentally unbalanced fools with no morals? That makes no sense. Even as an atheist liberal (and many are not atheistic) I have morals, values, and intelligence. Much more so, in fact, than many of my purportedly Christian friends.
