Was the Pro Wrestling Von Erich Family Cursed?

Randy Inman
The Von Erich family was a wrestling family through and through. They were huge in Texas and other National Wrestling Alliance areas. They also had a tragic string of events that were almost curse like. As a matter of fact it is known as the Von Erich Curse.

Fritz Von Erich was the patron of the family. Of his 6 sons only one didn't die as a young man. At least 3 killed themselves. By the time Fritz Von Erich died of cancer at age 68 he had suffered so much personal loss that he may have been relieved to die himself. This article examines the Von Erich's and the bad events that transpired to them.

Fritz Von Erich (born Jack Adkissen) was a former pro football player turned wrestler. He held many regional titles in his career. He was slated to win the National Wrestling Alliance heavyweight title, but Lou Thez hated novelty wrestlers who didn't use their real names, and refused to lose the belt to him. Fritz was huge with his Iron Claw finishing move, in St Louis, Texas and Japan at various times in his career. In his later years he was a promoter in Texas. He died September 10th 1997 of Brain Cancer.

Jack Adkissen son of Fritz Von Erich died at age 7 after accidentally being electrocuted and falling into some water and drowning.

David Von Erich was supposed to win the NWA World Title from Ric Flair in 1984. But before he could, he passed away. The official report was that he died of acute enteritis but many think he died of a drug overdose. Bruiser Brody who found his body admitted to flushing his pain killers down a toilet in the belief that it was an overdose. Brody himself was later stabbed to death by another wrestler in a locker room altercation.

Kerry Von Erich aka Modern Day Warrior, aka Texas Tornado. Unlike his bothers and father Kerry actually won the NWA Title from Ric Flair but didn't hold it long. In 1986 he was in a very bad motorcycle accident which eventually cost him one of his feet. The amputation was kept secret until after his death. Kerry had drug problems and after his 2nd drug arrest which violated his probation, he shot himself to death at his father's ranch in 1993.

Michael Von Erich didn't even want to be a wrestler. But when David died, he was talked into getting into the business. After an operation on his shoulder he developed toxic shock syndrome. Not being able to fully recover his strength from this, he committed suicide by overdose in 1987.

Chris Von Erich probably loved the sport than the rest of them. But his career never took off. He was the shortest and least talented of the Von Erich's. Depressed over his lack of success and his brother's deaths he killed himself in 1991.

Kevin Von Erich is the only son not to pass away. Now he has a son of his own, Ross Von Erich.

The Von Erich curse is also thought to have extended to World Class Championship wrestlers that they worked with. Terry Gordy, Chris Adams and Gino Hernandez all died untimely deaths.

I can only hope that Kevin and Ross Von Erich live long prosperous lives and die of old age. The family has suffered enough bad times. Thanks for reading this article on Associatedcontent.com

  • 5 Von Erichs died young.
  • Bruiser Brody tried to coverup evidence of a sucicide.

The last sentence of my coment was - His career was about to be sent into wrestling orbit. Sad it never happened.

I have to go with the accidential overdose as the cause of death for David. His last meal was a huge steak (with all the trimmings) and a good amount of beer. Not exactly the meal of someone suffering from "flu-like symptoms". Not to mention an inflamed intestine would be a gradual pain and he wouldn't have been able to stand it long enough to sleep and the pain would've woke him up.
Plus many wrestlers have stated that they had been told by Bruiser Brody that he flushed a lot of painkillers (bottled and loose) after he found David in order to spare the Von Erichs from being tarnished with an overdose. This theory holds water because an overdose, even accidential, at that time would've sank the Von Erichs and World Class Championship Wrestling like a stone overnight. I guess if I were Brody I would've done the same.
And the suicide theory is b.s. in my book. David was to become NWA champion upon his return from Japan and his career was about to be sent i

I grew up in the '80s to know them through their exploits in professional wrestling. I just can't forget quickly the supper claws of David that sent Kamala "The Ugandan Giant" out of the ring. They were heros indeed.

Great article. I think Kerry was the most shocking, because he was like the Hulk Hogan of the Texas wrestling scene. Crazy stuff indeed.
