The best Washington DC Halloween events go far beyond the usual haunted houses. These are 10 of the best local Halloween parties for art lovers, dog lovers, Harry Potter fans, and more.

National Symphony Orchestra Family Concert Halloween Event: Spooky Sounds and Scary Tale is for kids over 5 who love scary music. Join the NSO for pre-concert trick or treating, a petting zoo where kids can touch the instruments, and a post concert chat. The concert is 3:00 on October 31. Tickets are $15 to $18.

Frankenstein Halloween Event: Read Mary Shelly's Frankenstein with other classic fiction lovers in Washington DC. It's scheduled for October 26 at 7 pm.

Vegetarian Washington DC Halloween Event: The Washington DC Area Vegan Meetup Group has their annual Halloween party on October 30 at 8 pm in Arlington. It's a potluck with kids welcome and costumes optional.

Harry Potter Halloween Party: Dress up as your favorite character and carve pumpkins while you watch Harvey Putter and the Ridiculous Premise. It's October 23 at 6 in DC.

Red Dog Spa Halloween Spectacular: Maybe Washington DC Halloween events are going to the dogs but so what? Seven little dogs have already signed up for the party in Fairfax on October 23 at noon.

Halloween on Horseback Overnight Trip: For $150 you can ride through the Blue Ridge Mountains and camp out by the bonfire. The RSVP deadline is September 30. The weekend starts at 1:30 on October 30 in Hume, Virginia, south of DC.

Haunted History Race and Costume Bash: Teams of costumed challengers compete in an urban race to solve clues to locate 10 of the scariest spots in Washington DC. 18th Century Haunts and Specters: A costumed guide will take you through Alexandria's historic district and abandon you in a graveyard. It starts October 29 at 6:45 pm.

Rock Creek Cemetery Photo Safari: Professional photographer Melanie Otto will teach you to take eerie shots and guide you through Rock Creek cemetery including the famous Augustus Saint-Gaudens memorial. It starts at 2:30 on October 23.
