Washington, D.C. Screening Events the Week of December 27, 2010 - January 2, 2011

Resolve to watch more movies in 2011. Kick off the new year by visiting local theaters, and enjoy these special screenings this week in Washington, D.C.

Monday, December 27

Even at the American Film Institute, the titles are more limited this time of year, but there's plenty of holiday spirits. In addition to their usual beer and wine, the cafe is now serving champagne splits for just $12 while supplies last. For movies, choose from "Black Swan" with Natalie Portman, "I Love You Phillip Morris" with Jim Carrey, or "127 Hours" with James Franco. (Multiple show times at the AFI Silver Theatre; also showing December 28 through January 2).

Tuesday, December 28

If you prefer drinking Coca-Cola to champagne, the Shirlington Branch Library is showing "One, Two, Three" as their winter Billy Wilder film series continues. James Cagney stars as an American Coca-Cola executive in West Berlin who's been babysitting the CEO's daughter. The problem is she wants to marry a communist, and her father is coming for a visit. All shows are free. (6:30 p.m. at the Shirlington Branch Library).

Wednesday, December 29

"The Brotherhood: The Love School" is a vintage BBC TV series, but it has got movie stars. Ben Kingsley plays Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and Kika Markham plays Jane Burden in this depiction of the lives of the Pre-Raphaelite artists. It's being shown in conjunction with the exhibition "The Pre-Raphaelite Lens: British Photography and Painting, 1848-1875." Two single episodes will be screened on consecutive days. (1:00 at the National Gallery of Art in the East Building Concourse Auditorium on December 29 and 30).

Friday, December 31

If you hate wearing rented tuxedos, spend New Year's Eve at the American City Diner where you can dress casual and watch a free movie. The evening show will be the Stanley Kubrick masterpiece, "Doctor Strangelove." So stop worrying, and love to learn the bomb. It's noisy, but you can order your favorite breakfast foods anytime. (8 p.m. at the American City Diner & Cinema Cafe).

Sunday, January 2

It's a movie. It's a concert. Actually, it's both. The Irish rock collective 3epkano will perform live to accompany G.W. Pabst's Weimar-era classic "Diary of a Lost Girl" ("Tagebuch einer Verlorenen") with a new musical score. The movie stars Jazz Age legend Louise Brooks in a morality tale done in expressionistic style. The lines will probably be long for this special free event, but the auditorium is huge. (4:30 p.m. at the National Gallery of Art in the East Building Concourse Auditorium).

Celebrate the new year with old films and new releases this week in Washington, D.C.
