Washington Post's 'Root Inaugural Ball' Welcomes Oprah as 'First Guest'

Kate Michael
Inaugural weekend brought Hollywood and its glamorous happenings to DC with a long weekend of events to honor the 44th President. Planning an inaugural social schedule could have been an overwhelming task considering the number of Balls and Gala tickets available around town - but the hottest ticket events actually weren't ticketed at all.

One such 'ticket' was Washington Post's Root Inaugural Ball, an invitation only A-list event that celebrated the first anniversary of, and introduced many for the first time to, TheRoot.com.com. The Root is an online magazine written specifically for an African-American audience, which obviously enjoys wide support from a community of celebrities, as Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Tucker, David Gregory, Eric Holder, Diane Von Furstenberg, Spike Lee, Tom Joyner, John Singleton, and Natalie Portman joined Root co-Founder Henry Louis Gates to groove to the mixing magic of Biz Markie at the Smithsonian Museum of American History on Sunday night.

Despite holding their collective breath for the arrival of President (then President-elect) Obama, who was invited but unable to attend, the event organizers had the notable distinction of welcoming none other than Oprah Winfrey, who made her first official appearance in Washington at The Root Inaugural Ball. Though she was quickly whisked into the upstairs VIP lounge where she visited with Isaiah Washington and Larry King, she joined 1,300 formally attired guests at the event noshing on Ben's Chili Bowl half smokes and enjoying an open bar.
