I'm not sure quite how much praying the New Orleans Saints had to do on Sunday, but it worked. They were down 10-0 after the 1st quarter. They came back to where they were only losing 17-10 with little time left in the second quarter. Things looked like they were completely turning around for the Saints when they shanked a punt so badly that it landed on an unexpecting Redskins' back and was recovered by the Saints.
That is when disaster struck for the New Orleans Saints, or so it seemed. Drew Brees threw a ball down the middle of the field where Washington Redskin Kareem Moore decided to play the Grinch and pick it off. Moore rumbled down the sideline, then the guilt of what he had just done hit him. He noticed how sad Saints wide receiver Robert Meachem was and it made his heart grow by three sizes that play. So he gave the inflated toy to Meachem, who then took it 44 yards for a New Orleans touchdown. That eccentric play tied the game 17-17 at Halftime.
The Redskins kept attacking and had 30-23 lead with only 1:52 left in the game. They set-up for what would've essentially been a game ending field goal from only 23 yards out. Redskins' kicker, Shaun Suisham hooked it wide right giving the Saints one last breath of air. Brees had plenty of time to spare, as he connected with Robert Meachem for a 53-yard touchdown pass less than a minute later.
I'm thinking that even the Redskins knew they were losing this game once it went to overtime. They even won the coin flip and got the ball first in the sudden death session. This time, it was Mike Sellers that played Santa Clause, by fumbling on his own 37-yard line. The Saints drove into easy field goal range and completed their stunning 33-30 victory.
Drew Brees chalked up the victory to voodoo and karma. I say the Redskins are just big believers in Christmas and love to give to others.
