Watch Airplanes at Gravelly Point Park in Arlington, Virginia

Airplanes, Hiking, and Picnics

Would you like to visit a park, where you could see airplanes flying just out of arms reach? If you do, consider visiting Gravelly Point Park in Arlington, Virginia. This park is located Northof Reagan National Airport, on the George Washington National Parkway. It is a beautiful place to take a family, and people of all ages will enjoy watching aircraft of all sizes taking off and landing on the runways. This airport is busy throughout the day, and with it being situated on the banks of the Potomac River, it is a wonderful location for a family picnic and hike.

It is a shame that this airport does not have international flights, with the exception of Air Canada jets. To see a Boeing 747 or Airbus A340 would be incredible, but this airport does not have the long runways necessary for this type of equipment. While that is a minor disappointment, it is a thrill to see a 737 or A319 up close. Among the most interesting aircraft are the Pan Am Airways business jet, or the old but classy Delta Airlines 727. A military or government aircraft can be seen often as well, with the Coast Guard'sLearjet being a regular customer.

During the summer months, there are a lot of people watching the planes from this park. Thankfully, parking spots are plentiful, although there is a three hour limit during weekdays. Friendly members of the United States Park Police Department patrol the lots on a regular basis, with their marked vehicles or on bicycle. This high level of security ensures safety for all aircraft and visitors alike, and I've never felt in any type of danger at any time of day or night here. Just remember to take it easy on the GW Parkway, because the officers are often "collecting revenue."

In addition to the aircraft, consider walking on the Mount Vernon Trail that goes through the park. It is paved nicely, and with few hills, it is one of the best places in the Greater D.C. Metropolitan area for a hike or bike ride. Mile markers and signs are clearly placed throughout, and I enjoy walking this from Gravelly Point to the Jefferson Memorial in D.C. Its about a 25-30 minute walk, using this trail and crossing the 14th Street Bridge. It can be a bit hectic on the weekends, with a lot of roller bladers and joggers. However, people share this trail nicely, and I've never encountered anyone rude enough to obstruct traffic here.

If you get tired of hiking, or watching the planes, try your luck at fishing. The water of the Potomac is polluted, so there are advisory signs warning against eating too much of the catfish. It is a shame, but the fishing is excellent for catch and release. A bucket of worms and minnows will bring in some monster catfish, who are always fun to fight, and the bass are aggressive during the morning and evening hours. The fish avoid the waterway next to the runways, try your luck a bit further North for the best action.

Picnicking is an enjoyable activity here, and there are plenty of shaded areas. Try sitting near the soccer fields close to the road, as there are some large Oak Trees, that will protect you from summer rays associated with Northern Virginia weather. These fields are a great place for a pickup game. There are two to choose from, and while they can become crowded, it is usually possible to find some space for a group to play. The only problem we have had with an organized game, is that the aircraft noise can interfere with referee calls, game changes, etc. The grass is nicely maintained, and its a fun place to play.

I like this park a lot, and fully recommend it to anyone. Family members and friends from out of town, have always remarked how unique of a place it is. This is a great park for airplane spotting and people watching, and the crowd is always a mixture of young and old. If you have children, be sure to take them to some of the "professional spotters" near the runways. They are always listening to the airplane pilots and air traffic control with their specialized radio, and kids always seem to find this fascinating. This family friendly spot offers a lot, and considering it is free to visit, this makes for a wonderful value that is nothing short of entertaining.
