If You Need to Laugh, "Sunny" Just Might Be What the Doctor Ordered

Watching It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the original FX series, for the first time can be a shocking experience. There is literally no topic that "the gang"--which is the self-proclaimed name of the group of core characters--will not tackle. It's Always Sunny deals with pretty much every taboo theme available, always in a funny, unique, or completely obnoxious way. But even the way the characters are obnoxious is funny.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is one of the most original--and disturbing--comedies on TV today. It is a hilarious and weird show. Charlie Day is probably the most impressive actor on the show and is also usually at the wrong end of the punch line. Some of the heavy lifting on the show is done by the always hilarious Danny Devito. The gang is rounded out by Glenn Howeton (Dennis), Kaitlin Olson (Dennis's sister, Sweet Dee), and Rob McElhenny (who also created the show and plays Mac).

The show centers on Paddy's Pub, a bar in Philadelphia owned by the main characters. The crew is always trying to figure out how to better their situation without working hard. In other words, they are always up to some sort of scheme.

In one episode, Dennis decides to run for a very low level political office. His sister, Dee, decides to run against him. Back-stabbing ensues and neither sibling ends up even finishing the race. Dee, however, gets close to starting an affair with one of the city's politicians and Mac gets picked up for trying to bribe a low level official. Charlie, who can't read and write, does a terrible job as Dennis' chief political adviser.

The owners of Paddy's Pub have big dreams but neither the talent nor the focus to pull them off. They are also completely self-centered and couldn't care less about other people's feelings or situations. There is a whole lot of satire about modern day youth going on in this show, and it's usually really funny, clever, and sometimes uncomfortable.

If you are easily offended by taboo topics and often crude humor, than you may not be able to get into It's Always Sunny in Philadelpia. However, if you're interested in watching episodes of the show there are several places you can go to find full length episodes. But if you like watching talented actors work off of great scripts, with a little improv thrown in, then you may really like the show.

You can watch It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia on Hulu. Generally, the latest episodes are shown online about a week after the episode airs on FX.

You can also watch episodes online at FX.com, the official site of the show.

Fancast is the third place you can watch episodes of this hilarious show. It may take two or three episodes to really get into "Sunny," but after that you might get hooked. This TV show has what you might call a rabid cult following that seems to be getting bigger--and more mainstream--every day.

  • Rob Mcelhenney, who plays Mac, is also the creator of It's Always Sunny
  • You can watch this show in no less than three places online: FX, Hulu, and Fancast.
Danny Devito plays Dennis and Dee's dad, Frank. He is just as self-absorbed and sociopathic as the rest of the gang.
