Rhode Island Contestants Represent Big for This Tiny State

Moira Richardson
I'm a big fan of Project Runway. I missed Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum while the show was in legal hiatus. I HATED Bravo's sad substitutes for the best of the best: The Fashion Show was a huge Fashion No-No and Launch My Line is a total snooze-fest. I was worried about the state of Project Runway after last season in Los Angeles. There's something very unattractive about Tim Gunn, red-faced and sweaty. Sure, there was still Mood Fabrics, but LA just didn't have the same vibe. Thank goodness Project Runway has moved back to New York!

Rhode Islanders are geared up for Project Runway Season 7, because Project Runway Season 7 has some serious Little Rhody representation. Not that we wouldn't love the show without Jonathan, Mila, and Anne, but having three contestants with Rhode Island connections seriously increases my chance of a drive-by Tim Gunn sighting in New England, where it's chilly and the poor guy won't have to deal with so much sun. I love it!

The Providence Daily Journal ran an article about the three contestants with Rhode Island connections, but here's the gist: Jonathan Peters, 29, originally from Woonsocket, Rhode Island, now lives in Providence, which means that you, fellow Rhode Islander, might just have run into him getting coffee at Coffee Exchange, or maybe the now-defunct Reflections, since he seems like a "family" guy. He studied apparel design at the University of Rhode Island, he says in an interview on Project Rungay, and you can bet your sweet arse that this is a guy very familiar with Lorraine Fabrics, the ultimate Rhode Island fabric source. Judging from Peters first night look, this guy will be around for at least half the season. Will he win it? No, but he'll go far.

You'd have to have been living in Rhode Island in the late 80s / early 90s to remember Mila Hermanovski, 40, who graduated with a degree in Apparel from the Rhode Island School of Design. This Dallas, Texas native works as a costume designer for TV and film and as a personal stylist, so chances are good she's got the technical skills to stick with the competition for a few weeks. Still, her collection of past work on the Lifetime website isn't that innovative or interesting, and my prediction is that she'll be the type to crack under pressure. Will she win it? Not a chance.

A more recent face around Providence was Anne Marie Lynnet, 23, who graduated from RISD with a major in printmaking in 2008. Originally from Whifefish Bay, WI, Anne currently lives in Los Angeles where she works as a printmaker and design. She's cute, which is probably part of why she was chosen for the show, but I don't think that the technical skills are her strong suit. I predict that she has sewing issues at least once throughout the seasons. Of the designers with Rhode Island connections, I suspect she'll be the first to go. Sorry, Anne!

Still, even if a Little Rhody representative can't win it this season, it'll still be fun to watch 'em try.
