Watch a Short Google Video Describing "Google Voice" and How to Sign Up for Free

Google Voice Open for Business in the US

Catherine Dagger
Google opened Google Voice to US users in summer 2010. Previously restricted to invited users, Google Voice was made available for free to anyone in the US in June 2010.

Google Voice is Google's web-based platform to help users manage their communications in a more integrated and convenient way. It gives you a single number which will ring all your phones and offers voicemail that works like email - Google Voice transcribes your voicemail to text. It also gives you free calls and text messages to the US and Canada along with cheap international calls.

You can allow selected users to contact all your landline and mobile/s with a single number and, if you want, restrict others to one phone only. You can send callers to voice mail, view a transcript if you prefer to read their message and listen in to callers before choosing to accept their call or routing them to voicemail. The features and options are too many to list here but Google Voice gives you lots of control over your communications. For example, if you have an important meeting you can block all callers bar the one or two you need to hear from. You can use the settings to bar a gossipy friend from calling during the day or a workaholic colleague from calling during the evening.

Google, as ever, are actively seeking feedback on the Google Voice service and there are enhancements in the pipeline. Have a look at this Google video to decide whether you want - or need - Google Voice.

Google Voice can do, and if you haven't seen it yet, this video provides a good overview in less than two minutes:

The voice of Google Voice is Kiki Baessell, a young Googler with no professional voiceover experience. Google chose Kiki because they figure users will be happy to hear her pleasant voice when they call in to check messages.
