Watch the Teaser Trailer and Plan a Trip to 'Robotropolis'
'The Host' Producers Bring Us Renegade Robots
Boku Films ("The Host" and "The Host 2") and former "Star Trek: The Next Generation" writer Christopher Hatton have collaborated on the upcoming sci-fi thriller "Robotropolis." Hatton wrote the film with Kelvin Tong's Boku Films producing. The effects-heavy movie is currently in post-production after filming in Singapore.
"Robotropolis" revolves around "a group of reporters [who] are covering the unveiling of a new facility that is completely maintained by robot prototypes. When one of the robots goes haywire, the reporters find themselves not just reporting on the malfunction, but fighting for their lives."
Sounds like it could be the platform for some bloody good sci-fi fun. It sounds a little reminiscent of Roger Corman's "Chopping Mall." In that movie, robots have taken the place of security guards in a mall. They go berserk and start killing everybody when some kids sneak in to have an all-night party.
Although "Robotropolis" will have a smaller budget than Boku Films' "The Host 2," a production still released for the film shows some impressive-looking robots. It has been proved in the past that if a director knows what he is doing he can make a great film on a shoestring budget. Does anyone remember a cult classic by the name of "Hardware?"
Two trailers for "Robotropolis" were recently released online. One uses the handheld faux-documentary style of camerawork. That does not excite me at all. The robot holding a severed head was a nice touch, although the prop looked a bit on the fake side. The second trailer has reporters and other people talking about how the robots went bonkers. The acting seems a bit sketchy in places. The robots in both trailers look great.
"Robotropolis" is being distributed through Bleiberg Entertainment. Vividthree Productions handled visual effects. It stars Zoe Naylor ("The Reef"), Graham Sibley ("Zombie Honeymoon," "The O.C."), and Tonya Cornelisse ("NCIS," "ER"). The movie was originally slated for a May release but did not make the date.
