In Oregon, there are several indoor and outdoor activities to enjoy. There are the sea lion caves, which you can observe the sea lions in their natural environment. One of the favorite spots is the Oregon Coast Aquarium. This is the home to over 500 species of animals, and the former home of Keiko, the famous killer whale from the movie, Free Willy. You are able to walk through an aquarium, and watch the sharks, sting rays, turtles, etc., as they swim above.
Along your travels down Highway 101, you will also find nine beautiful lighthouses. You can find these incredible sites from Cannon Beach to Port Orford, a stretch of about 250 miles. For a snack, there is Tillamook Cheese Visitors Center. They have cheese samples, ice cream, fudge, a cafe and gift store. You can also see how this famous cheese is made and packaged to be sent out to stores throughout the country.
One of the most exciting things to do in Oregon is whale watching. You can stop at Depoe Bay to enjoy watching these amazing creatures right before your eyes. You can just sit and watch them for hours at a time. There are several areas along the way that provide pull-offs for you to stop and watch the whales play, eat and relax. You can also enjoy a picnic lunch while whale watching at the provided picnic tables. If you're lucky, you can also hear them communicate to one another as they make their journey up and down the coast.
Another great thing about the coast, are the accommodations. There are several beach front hotels along the ocean that provide ocean front views. Imagine waking up in the morning and hearing the crashing waves, or sitting out on your balcony drinking coffee. Before heading to bed, you can also sit out on the balcony and see small fires along the beach where others are enjoying the sounds of the ocean.
No matter where your journey takes you in Oregon, there will be something for everyone in your family. From walks on the beach, aquariums, shopping and dining. It will be one vacation you will never forget.
