Watchmen: Nudity, Violence and Adult Theme, Make This Superhero Movie Unfriendly to Kids

Layla Lair
Watchmen, a comic book series brought to the big screen, is definitely not targeted for kids and younger groups. The Watchmen characters are not the do good or save the day superheroes that parents and kids might expect when thinking of other comics developed for the box office. Just as in the Watchmen comics, this movie does contain graphic and very violent scenes. Watchmen the movie also contains full nudity, and very adult sexual situations that take many forms. The character portrayals and adult situations make this superhero movie one to pass with the kids.

Within the first minutes of Watchmen, you see several of the superheroes fighting in the Vietnam War and taking delight at completely exploding the bodies of their opposition. Before you begin to process this, the superhero called the Comedian shoots and kills a young pregnant Vietnamese woman who is carrying his child. Add a near rape by the Comedian, and the adult nature of the film seems to squash traditional views of superheroes that parents and kids alike may share.

The violence in the Watchmen is very powerful, and much too extreme for kids. I felt it held true to the comic type violence that you may observe in print. This transferred to the screen as very graphic, intense, and at times a hard to watch depiction of the scenes (blood splatters, limbs broken in odd angles, exploding bodies, sawed off arms).

Yes, there are sex scenes and both male and female nudity as well. The Character known as Dr. Manhattan is shown more than once in full frontal nudity. Some may not have as much issue with his nudity because he is a creation of animation. Although animated, Dr. Manhattan is very detailed and nothing is left to imagine about the aspects and nudity of his glowing blue form.

Silk Spectre II and Night Owl II share a very intense and lengthy sex scene that is played out in slow motion to the music Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. This adult scene might have many thinking of the late night programs found on premium channels because of the degree of nudity and very adult choreography.

The cinematography and soundtrack are outstanding for this film. As an adult, I absolutely enjoyed Watchmen the movie and would highly recommend it to a mature audience. However, the violent content, language, nudity, and very adult sexual situations make Watchmen over the top for kids under 17. Watchmen the movie definitely earns its very R rating and warrants a baby sitter so keep the kids at home. For more information on Watchmen, refer to the official website listed below.

This is a good movie. I took my kids to see it and they loved it!

What is the point of these reviews repeatedly "warning" readers that Watchmen is not for kids? It's rated R for a reason. And to all you parents (you know who you are) who took your kids to see Watchmen just because it was a based off a comic book, shame on you.

Watchmen was not, and never has been, aimed at children. The adult themes and situations were, in fact, the whole point behind the original work, which was an examination of how comic book-like heroes would actually function in the real world.
