Water, Air and Earth: 3 Elements of a Triathlon

Tushar Garg
Triathlon is an endurance test that requires you to swim, cycle and run in immediate succession that proves to be lot of fun and great for soul. The winner of triathlon is the one who finishes all the three physical challenges in the shortest time. But to win a triathlon you need to be mentally strong as well so participating in the sport itself is being a winner. It's a great way to come closer to the elements of nature where you can forget all the worldly worries and just be yourself.

A triathlon starts with swimming, not in a pool, but in open water. You need to swim long distances in cold sometimes little turbulent waters so it's better that you use dolphin kicking to get a head start and do a bit of body surfing to use the energy of waves. Also try to get closer to your competitor if you are not the leader. This will help you to avoid water resistance and will conserve energy for the other two events. Using lesser leg muscles will also help in conserving energy but whatever you do don't lose sight of the buoys that mark the course of the swim. Remember that you are not in a pool so don't get off course.

After you finish off with water it's time to feel the air on your bike. But before you mount your bike remember that your helmet is on and it stays there as long as you are on your bike. These bikes are state of art equipment with aerodynamic wheels, handle bars and steep seat to reduce air resistance and increase speed. But drafting which means coming closer to each other to reduce air resistance is not allowed. You can feel the strokes of air on your body as you ride through the course and towards the end of the segment you can bike with higher cadence that is increase the speed of paddling to keep you muscles loose for running.

Now it's time to feel the earth on your feet as you run along the course. The only difference here is that you are already exhausted of swimming and cycling. So many a times it proves to be very demanding to just run at the same pace as you would have otherwise. However it does not in any way diminishes the exhilaration that you get from the sport.Time is essential at the end to win the event but what is more important is the ability to get so close to nature that you would have never thought of. In the end triathlon just makes you feel alive again so it's just give a shot and have fun doing it.
