Water Filter FAQ

A water filter is a device used to trap pollutants or contaminants from drinking water, making it safer to drink. If you wish to know how safe you drinking water is; it might be best to request for a water quality analysis report from proper local authorities. If you are using a well, have the water tested for contaminants. A home water test kit would also suffice or you could pay a professional water testing company to do the test for you.

City water usually contains harmless chemicals such as sulfur, iron and manganese, and chlorine. These substances may contribute to staining, color, and odor problems. City water has more solid particles that settle at the bottom of the glass. Because of dissolved calcium and magnesium, city water is characteristically hard, making it hard to launder and clean. Some traces of lead are found in city water. Exposure to lead could induce learning deficiencies among children. The color of well water is usually yellow or brown due to the leaching of decomposing matter in soil. The taste is earthy or woody, and sometimes musty. One can smell the groundwater scent while drinking water from the well. These are only a few of the contaminants found in drinking water, but reason enough to use a water filter.

A water is different from a water purifier in the sense that water filter removes bacteria and protozoa. A water purifier does more than that. It destroys or removes the protozoa and bacteria. In order to determine which of the two is what you need, your water sources and susceptibility must be reviewed. There is no need to purchase a water purifier if sanitation is not a problem. If you are in a remote area, you could buy the filter.

Now, you are probably wondering why there is a need to buy a water filter when water treatment plants should have removed harmful substances from the water supply. Well, the removal of harmful substances is not always effective in water treatment plants. Buying a water filter would ensure that you and your family are drinking clean water.

If you buy a longer filter, the only advantage you would have is production of more water. Otherwise, the features are just the same for a shorter filter. You may wonder when to change a filter. There are different life spans to a water filter cartridge. The length of time its use could be exhausted would have to depend on the contaminants in the water. To make things easier, check for the manufacturer's recommendation. They usually offer estimated time frames. You could also use the reminder indicators found on the filter to guide you. Normally, a filter has no shelf life, unless you put it near extreme temperatures. Also, keeping the filter in its original packaging would make it last more.

The ceramic filter element must be cleaned once you noticed that it takes longer for the water to filter into the lower chamber. You can clean it by holding it under clear running water. Use a scrubbing pad or used toothbrush to clean properly. The filter should be cleaned at least every three months.
