Water Wheel Game
You will need a bunch of water balloons. The park probably has a hydrant that you can fill them from. Dollar stores sell water balloons in large packages, so buy a lot. The kids (and adults) will go through them pretty fast. They do not cost a lot so this is a pretty cheap, fun game.
You also need a colorful hula hoop. You can get these at the dollar store too. While you are there buy several of them, as you can use them for other games. Hula hoops have been around for years! The adults and the kids will have fun with them.
For the Water Wheel game, get everyone that is playing to make a big circle. Place the hula hoop in the center of the circle. It will be your target area. Give everyone a water balloon and have them aim for the circle one at a time. Whoever misses the hula hoop circle is out of the game.
Continue around the circle giving water balloons to those who have hit the target. Those who have missed the target may wish to stay in the circle just to enjoy the water spray on a hot day! You can make a variation of this game by lining two teams of people up across from each other. Place Team A's Hula Hoop target directly in front of the thrower on Team B and visa versa. Someone is definitely getting a shower!
Water Balloon Basketball Game
This game is mainly for children, but you will need a brave adult to hold the hula hoop! Line the children up. Have an adult hold the hula hoop high enough so that the children can walk under it. Give each child a water balloon.
One at a time the child should walk up to the hula hoop, toss the balloon up and over the sides, like a basketball hoop and then catch the balloon as they walk under the hula hoop. If the balloon breaks the child must sit out. If he or she catches the balloon without it braking they can go to the back of the line for another try.
This is a pretty fast paced game if you keep the children moving. They may also be very good at it, so you may want to have another adult ready to take over holding the hula hoop! Your arm will get tired, plus you are bound to get a shower or two! If the adults want to challenge the kids, just raise the hoop higher for the adults.
Hula hoops and water balloons do not take up a lot of room. You may want to keep a package of water balloons and a couple of hula hoops in your car trunk or storage area. They are great to drag out for a sudden decision to visit a park!
