Water Isn't Just Water Anymore

Take a stroll down your local supermarket's isle for water. There are so many new options. My family loves to drink water so I found myself spending quite a bit of time on this isle. I wanted to write an article about the various new forms of water and what their benefits are. This will help you make the best decision when purchasing water for your family.

1. Spring Water or Distilled Water? Spring water is derived from an underground formation from which water flows naturally to the earth's surface. Distilled water is said to be the closest thing we have to pure water. Distilled water is heated to separate impurities. The steam is then converted back in to a liquid form and all impurities are removed. Either of these choices are good for your family. I personally by Spring water for myself and my girls.

2. Flavored Waters. Products like Fruit2O have no calories, but add a fruit flavor. There are 13 different flavors. They do contain Splenda, which has no calories, but I am always cautious about sweeteners. The good thing is that flavored waters get many people drinking water who wouldn't otherwise. My daughter, who does drink water, always begs me for Fruit2O so they must be tasty.

3. Seltzer Water. My mother is an avid coffee drinker and I have never seen her drink plain water. The closest she ever got was drinking seltzer water. This too comes in several flavors. Seltzer water is plain water into which carbon dioxide gas has been dissolved. It has a fizz much like soda. If you are a soda drinker this may be the choice for you.

4. Vitamin Water. There are so many new vitamin waters on the market it is hard to know which one to choose. I don't buy vitamin water because I am actively taking vitamin supplements. You don't want to overdose on vitamins. If, however, you find taking vitamins difficult this could be a great source for you to get the dose you need. I will say that vitamin water can be beneficial for players to drink during sporting events.

Not only are there different types of waters, but there are different shaped bottles as well. Poland Springs just came out with water bottles shaped like rocket ships for kids. They are called Aquapods. My daughter loves them.

Our bodies need water to stay fit and healthy. Please read all of the above choices and see if there is a water that you would like to add to your daily routine. You'll be healthier for it.

Americans are drinking bottled water in record numbers--a whopping 5 billion gallons in 2001, according to the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA). That's the same amount of water that falls from the American Falls in two hours.
