Water Lillies

A Poem

Kyla Hockman

The water lilies bloom again,

Year after year they return.

Like ghosts arising from the ashes,

The ashes of what came before.

They are simple flowers,

Yet so beautiful, as they are admired,

For hours upon hours.

They stand the test of time,

Their beauty sublime.

The purple petals give way,

To an orange centered,

Shaped like the sun.

They make the whole day seem,

Like a chance, a hope a dream.

They float above the water,

Like sirens calling sailors in.

I do not know how to stop myself,

From being drawn in.

I stare at the water lilies,

Remembering days gone by.

Seeing them painted in galleries,

With a love and tenderness,

That made my heart sigh.

I love the water lilies,

That remind me of the past,

Of quiet summer days,

That I wish would last and last.
