Water Toys for Under $50

Good Enough to Take to the Lake

Kelly Spies
When it comes to finding safe water toys to take to the lake with you this summer you'll find it hard to get good ones without going nearly bankrupt. That doesn't mean that you don't have options though. There are plenty of great water toys on the market that are designed with lakes in mind. Here are just a few of those.

Water Wheel - The water wheel is a really neat inflatable tube that allows kids to sit inside and roll around. It's sort of like the hamster wheel concept. The water wheel comes in a couple of different sizes depending on the manufacturer. Price varies according to size. Costco carries one for $39.99

Boogie Boards - You can't go wrong with boogie boards. Kids and adults alike will spend hours tooling around the lake on them. If you head for the brand name boogie boards sold at sport shops you're going to pay a hefty price. Big Lots, on the other hand, sells boogie boards that are just as good for around $8 and they come in cool looking designs.

2 Man Inflatable Rafts - During the early part of the summer you can find 2 man inflatable rafts everywhere. These water toys are sold at grocery stores, drug stores like Wal-greens, toy stores, Wal-Mart, Target and probably even flea markets. You will pay as little as $8 or as high as $60.

I bought 6 of these inflatable water toys from Raley's Supermarket for $10 a piece. The oars - with two in each packet - were $4 a piece. We were able to float all around the lake in these with no problems.

Motorized Wave Runner - If I was a kid I would be begging for the Motorized Wave Runner. It has an easy to use steering handle bars and glides over the water at a slow steady pace. It only holds up to 70 pounds so it's definitely something for younger children and requires adult supervision. The motorized wave runner sells for around $40.

Six Flags Bumper Boats - These aren't just ordinary bumper boats. The six flags bumper boats come equipped with mounted squirt guns that will shoot another rider at 20 feet away. They hold up to 100 pounds so even the slightly older kids can get in on this action. You'll find the Six Flags Bumper Boats at Wal-Mart for $40.

Always follow safety guidelines when using water toys in a lake or other body of water. Stay safe and happy swimming!

  • There are good bargains on water toys everywhere. You just have to pay attention to the sales.
  • Instead of heading to a sporting good store, look at Big Lots, Target etc.
  • Boogie boards are a cheap way to entertain the kids at the lake.

I swear, kids these days are spoiled. Back in my day the best water toy was the garden hose :) Great list, Kelly. Now I want a bumper boat, too.
