Watts Matter - Save Electrical Power at Your Office

Jitu
We are moving towards an age where it will be difficult to get the help of electricity. Due to lack of sufficient fuel we have to stop all thermal power plants. As a work around we need to trace more on natural source of electricity, such as solar power, thermal power, wind power etc. We are thinking to depend on nuclear power, but that also can not be a good solution. One day we may reach at the last stage of nuclear source. We need to remember that nuclear power sources are also some type of minerals extracted from mine.

Along with these unconventional power sources we also need to think how we can reduce the use of electricity on our daily life. I saw the electricity misuses are more often in a large corporate world rather than individual houses. In case of individuals we are aware about the electric bills and always want to reduce our bill and in that way we try to reduce the misuse of electrical power. If we see the large picture with huge source of money and multi ownership, people become least bother about little loss of money due to misuse of electrical power. We can plan to save electrical power at your work place too.

1. 9 am to 9 pm is known as peak period of electrical usage. Try to shift the electrical usage away from the 9 am to 9 pm peak time and avoid adding to the load during this period.

2. Switch on air conditioners an hour after work and switch off an hour before closing for the day.

3. Run all air conditioners at 75° F (approximately, 24° C). One of the biggest drains on power supply is air conditioners set at 'chilling' temperatures rather than a 'comfortable' level. Ensuring that air conditioners operate at a 'comfortable' 75° F (24°C) at all times will go a long way. One will use 3 to 5 percent less energy for each degree if air conditioner is set above 22 degrees. So set the thermostat of your air conditioners at 75° F (24° C) to provide most comfort at the least cost.

4. Switch off from the plug switch. We can save an unbelievable 5% of world's power if we switch off from plug points. For example, mobile chargers left on when not in use. Switching them off will save considerable amount of power. So, let's switch off our ACs, TVs, DVDs, mobile charger, etc from the plug point every single time.

5. Set computers to Sleep or Hibernate state. The "sleep mode" feature on your computer enables it to use less power during periods of inactivity. Also configure your computer to "hibernate" automatically after 30 minutes or so of inactivity. The "hibernate mode" turns the computer off in a way that doesn't require you to reload everything when you switch it back on. It saves energy and is more time-efficient than shutting down and restarting your computer from scratch.

6. Turn off your monitor when you leave the office. If possible try to shut down your computer when you leave office. If not all weekdays, at least on Friday try to shut down your computer.

7. Turn off all lights which are not in use while you are at office.

8. Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) in your office to save up to 75% of electricity.

9. Don't use a fancy table lamp at your desk if don't really need that. I saw several people decorate their office with fancy lights. This is nothing but of killing yourself.

You could look at PC energy management software like http://www.greentrac - it uses positive behaviour acknowledgment to improve energy usage and thereby reduce your power bills
