Waves of Time

April Higney
He sat upon the sandy beach, watching the waves,
making love to the shore,
the moon held high, a clear sky,
something different felt in this night, so many times he'd been here before.

The soft sand still warm from the day, beneath his feet,
sandals resting next to him, side by side.
This beach, seemingly all his, at this hour,
the only sounds, his heartbeat, soft breaths, in rhythm with the tide.

He sees a movement, a shadow, a figure,
he wonders, who could be out here this late.
She nears, a thin white transparency of a scarf, dances in the wind,
the motion bouncing of the ocean's white and dark highlights,
he wonders, who could she be, his fate?

She seems to hear him,
hands motioning for him to come along,
he wonders, have they met?...where?...whispers on the sea,
the invite, a must, he'd been sitting alone far too long.

He forgets his sandals, seemingly the pain that brought him here to think,
his stride an eager pace, to meet with this shadow there.
She smiles upon him, eyes glowing meeting his,
her words gentle, "a quiet beach, mind if I share?"

No longer a shadow, she seems illuminated like the stars twinkling happily.
She collects shells washed up in the drifts of tide beneath her feet,
a larger one, holding it to her ear, a light-hearted laugh, "have a listen?"
"We're already at the beach" replied he grins.
she winks at him, "Oh, but it's the sound where day and night, earth and sky loves meet"

He holds the shell to listen, she still captures his gaze.
Smiling he whispers, "But it is music that I hear."
Hands meet, words flow together in with the waves,
"perhaps a slow dance?" the rhythms so clear.

The beauty of the night holds gently,
time drifts, he awakens as sunlight breaks through.
She disappeared, was she just a dream, a ghost, this shadow,
sandals resting side by side,
and the shell,
their music passes through.
