The first thing you should know is that when you avoid doing things like getting your oil changed regularly, it will cause other problems that can cause your car to ultimately break down. So first make sure you are doing what you can on your own to avoid any problems to begin with. A lot of times when you notice something wrong with the car and don't get it checked out as soon as possible, an avalanche of problems begin to happen. Usually it's something small but our neglecting to take care of it right away causes something else to happen. Think of your car like your own body. If your ankle breaks and you don't get it fixed, but keep walking on it, it will start taking its effect on your knee and you're hip also. I hope you get the picture here.
If it's already passed that point and you must take it in immediately, ask the mechanic's for an estimate before they do any work, even though it will cost you. People feel that mechanic's screw them because they don't ask how much it is going to cost them before they let the mechanic do the work. Make sure you ask questions. If you do not understand what they are talking about when they are trying to explain things to you, don't stop asking questions until you understand. Never show a mechanic that you are clueless, even if you are, and never be afraid to tell a mechanic no. Many times the second opinion is very necessary.
Something that will be helpful to you would be to join a forum online related to car repair. There are people that are more than willing to answer your questions and give you advice on how to go about repairing your vehicle. Chances are someone has the same exact vehicle you do and has had the same problems. With forums you can even send a private message members which can help you get a thorough explanation if don't understand something. That way you won't go in to the mechanic shops looking like fresh bait, and as a result you will have lessen your chances of getting ripped off.
