Ways to Avoid Non-stop Snacking

Rebecca Green
Do you find yourself wandering around your house or apartment just trying to find anything you can to munch on whenever you aren't doing anything else? If you answered yes to even part of the question, you just might be an over snacker. As everyone knows, this kind of snacking can ruin your healthy diet and even ruin any diet plans you have for losing weight. Many people don't see this snacking as harmful in any way but every bit you snack doesn't help. So there you go saying, "Well there's nothing I can do about it - I don't think about it. Sorta just happens!" To that I say, "nay." There are things you can do about it and I figured a few helpful ideas might help you defeat the snacking monster within you.

Exercise

So there you are watching a movie or television show and the only natural thing you want to do is snack while viewing. This may sound absolutely silly to try, however, it has worked for me in the past. Instead of snacking during one of my fave programs, I do situps or other exercises where I can still see the television. By the time I'm done watching the program I've given myself at least a 30 minute workout and my body just goes, "erk! No more!" Ask trainers at your local YMCA if you have one, exercise can make some not want to eat. For me, yes, it definitely works. If the weather is good out and the show is a repeat I argue with myself to get up and go for a long walk outside. Generally by the time I go down town I can buy something small to carry home and snack on without feeling bad. Chances are if I buy a small bag of chips or cookies I've worked off quite a bit of the calories in that little bag. One of my best little habits I got into on walks was buying a bottle of water instead of soda. This definitely made me feel full and happy by the time I got home.

Drink Water

Whenever one of those evil snack demons seems to pop its ugly head up, go get a glass of water. Water is excellent for so many reasons. You need water to clean out the bad from your system, it makes your skin healthier and beyond all else it makes you feel full - unlike what happens if you drink sodas. Consider this a healthy snack if you need one. You can get your daily amount of water and crush each of those little snack monsters. Even better? It'll help you eat less at meals and ultimately help you lose weight. There isn't a downside to water at all - as long as it's clear and able to be used as drinking water. No, there's no such thing as allergy to water as far as I know, but if water isn't your 'cup of tea' so to say, you can get a flavor packet for a bottle of water that's maybe 20 calories and flavors it to lemonade.

Housework

So say it's too cold out or poor weather makes it impossible for you to head out and exercise or even distract yourself from the television (Or computer, I won't say compulsive snacking is solely television-oriented). I'll look around for a snack and notice that the floors could use a touch up mop job and then before I know it I'm using elbow grease to get the kitchen looking spotless. As anyone knows, when you get into that cleaning mode you just can't stop or you'll give up for the night. These cleaning rampages tend to make me forget about wanting a snack (Minus a drink of water if I start sweating) and also make me sleepy. This also is a "kill two birds with one stone" because let's face it, if we clean something now we have time to do something else later and the house isn't falling apart, right? But say you have an immaculate house anyway. Housework can be outdoors weeding a garden or mowing a lawn. Sure, it sounds silly, but if you distract yourself from those snack pangs, soon enough you'll be over it.

Sure, there are healthy shack foods like fruits you can eat instead of junk food, however, if you can't find yourself eating healthy foods instead of the unhealthy alternatives, these options to distract your hunger till it goes away may help. Remember that you have to keep fighting those cravings and no matter what - you are stronger than those cravings will make you believe. You can overcome it and defeat the snack monster within.
