Ways to Beat Stress

We've all been there. No one is immune. So many things happening all at once, we don't which to deal with first. Head swimming with confusion, feeling like we're being pulled in way too many different directions at one time.Yes, we've all experienced stress.

How do you relax when you get stressed out? How do you get your thoughts straight again? Here are some ways to help relax a little and beat stress.

Often times, when we are stressed, it seems as though we just can't find the time to relax. If this is you, try simply taking a few slow deep breaths. Concentrate on your breathing when you do this. Take in a deep breath and then blow it out. Pretend you are blowing the stress out. After a few breaths like this, you should feel a bit more relaxed, you may feel your heart-rate drop a little, and feel as if your mind is a bit more clear.

When you are driving down the road, listen to your radio. Channel surf until you find a song that you really like. Turn it up and sing along. I have found that if you do this for even a little while, you tend to end up feeling better. Less stressed because if only for a few minutes, you weren't thinking about your problems.

Ever been so stressed out that every muscle in your body hurts? Try doing simple stretching exercises. Stand up, stretch your arms over your head, then bend over to touch your toes. Move your neck in a circular motion, then side to side. This should help you feel a bit more energized, and less stressed.

Take a hot bath or shower. Just enjoy the feel of the water, and visualize the water washing your problems away.

Read a book to help take your mind off of things. Reading often helps you escape reality if only for a little while. After you read for a while, you feel more relaxed. You may be able to deal with your stresses in a whole new way.

Do you have kids? Feel stressed?? Try unexpectedly making a funny face at your kids. They will inevitably start laughing, which will at the very least, make you smile. Once again, this takes your mind off of the problem for a minute or so. Kids can get you worked up, there is no doubt, but they can also be terrific stress busters.

If you have a pet, try petting it for a few minutes. I have always found that my entire mental attitude becomes a bit different when I am petting an animal. They call dogs "man's best friend" for a reason.

If you enjoy doing it, play a video, board, or card game. Do a crossword puzzle. Any of these will give you a mentally active way to relax.

Make a list, either mentally, or on paper, of the things that are stressing you out. Now, evaluate them. What is bothering you that you really have no control of? Cross them out. You can't control it, so why should you really stress about it? Now, of the things that are left, what will not effect you in the next five years. Cross those off too. If it won't effect you in five years, it probably isn't as important as you think it is at that time. Okay, prioritize whatever is left on your list and tackle those issues one at a time.Life doesn't seem so demanding when it is all put in front of you in this manner. You are more able to focus on those things that are most important, as a result, your stress level decreases.

Sometimes, writing yourself a schedule that gives you five or ten minutes for yourself between activities. Whether it be a meeting, errand you have to run, or whatever, giving yourself five or ten minutes in between each task allows you to breath and clear your head.

If all else fails, scream out loud at nothing in particular. Go in your yard and just scream. After a minute or so, you will probably feel pretty silly, and a lot less stressed. You can even cry it out. Crying is a good way to release those emotions. You may end up with a stuffy nose, and a headache, but, at least you don't feel so stressed.

Stress isn't always a bad thing. Stress in small amounts can help a person. On the other hand, too much stress can literally kill a person. The next time you are feeling a bit too overwhelmed, try one of these activities. You may find that they are beneficial.

Always remember, no matter how bad things seem to be, they could be worse.
