Ways to Burn or Save 150 Calories

Jeni Booker Senter
If you don't have the time, the money, or the inclination to hit the gym every week, there are a lot of different ways to burn calories. Generally, you only need to maintain constant motion for about thirty minutes to burn 150 calories. Some of the most effective weight loss techniques involve lifestyle changes. If you can implement a couple of these calorie burning activities into your daily life, you will have taken the first step toward losing weight and obtaining the health benefits of exercise. As you will see, you can exercise, without exercising!

HOUSEKEEPING
We all have to clean our homes, why not think of it as a work out. You can lose weight by doing any of these activities:

Cooking for 45 minutes
Cleaning Blinds, closets and/or shelves for 30 minutes
Scrubbing floors for 20 minutes
Vacuuming for 35 minutes
Mopping floors for 38 minutes

YARD WORK
Go ahead and multitask. Keep up with the Jones and donate your too-big clothes to them when you lose the weight!

Mowing the lawn for 30 minutes
Gardening for 40 minutes
Raking leaves for 30 minutes
Shoveling snow for 15 minutes

FUN
There is always time to have fun! How wonderful is it that you can have a good time and melt away the pounds at the same time.

Playing pool for an hour
Dancing for 30 minutes
Playing Frisbee for 20 minutes
Shopping for 40 minutes
Fishing for 35 minutes
Riding a motorcycle for 17 minutes

While you are turning into a lean, mean, non-exercising machine, try to implement a couple of these calorie reduction techniques each day and watch the pounds melt away even faster. Substituting high calorie foods with these options can save you thousands of calories every year.

Swap your sugary soda for water or diet soda - saves 150 calories per soda
Use fat-free margarine instead of regular margarine - saves 95 calories per tablespoon
Instead of salad dressing, use vinegar - saves 100-300 calories
Instead of calorie loaded dips, try salsa - saves about 150 calories
Instead of a Pina-Colada have a daiquiri - saves 150 calories

Choose a "free food" that you really enjoy and use it to fill up when you are still hungry, or to snack on when you just want something to munch on. Free foods are foods that require more calories to digest than they contain. Some free foods are: grapefruit, cabbage, lettuce, broccoli, green beans, apples, spinach and turnips. These may not sound like prime noshing, but if you make a salad from some of these ingredients and dress it with lemon juice or vinegar, you will have a filling snack with no guilt.
