Ways to Celebrate Valentine's Day in a Long Distance Relationship

Kyra Lennon
Being apart from the one you love is particularly difficult on Valentine's Day. It can be really tough if you are in a long distance relationship because you can't engage in the normal Valentine's Day celebrations. However, there are ways to bridge the gap. Whether you are hundreds or thousands of miles apart, you can make it feel as if you are together on that special day.

Make an early morning call

If you can't wake up beside the person you love on Valentine's Day, make an early morning call to make them smile. Let them know you are thinking of them so they don't feel so alone, and also use the time to confirm any plans you have for later in the day.

Make use of technology

The chances are, if you are in a long distance relationship, you will be used to using your computer as a way to chat to your other half. Whether it is through Skype or another kind of messenger which allows free phone calls, this is the first step in celebrating Valentine's Day with your long distance love. Spend the evening talking and if you have a webcam, be sure to turn it on as this will bring you even closer.

Watch a movie together

It might seem a little strange, but this is an excellent way to celebrate Valentine's Day in a long distance relationship. All you need is a webcam, and to both be watching the same movie at the same time. It's a great way to feel close when you aren't physically together because you get to see your partner's expressions via the webcam as you watch. You will be laughing together (or crying together, depending on the film you choose!) and the distance won't seem as far.

Surprise your partner with a holiday

What better Valentine's Day gift for your long distance partner than tickets for a holiday? Whether you choose to sweep them away somewhere exotic, or you arrange to visit them - emailing them the tickets on February 14th will be an excellent surprise and you can start making plans for your trip instead of being sad that you aren't together!

Don't forget to send a gift!

No matter how far apart you are, there is no excuse for not sending a gift for your beloved to open on Valentine's Day! Everyone likes to receive surprise chocolates, but online stores are the key to finding something unique and different. Arrange to open your gifts together online so you can enjoy each other's reactions!

Celebrating Valentine's Day in a long distance relationship is always hard but instead of pining for your partner, make an effort to spend some quality time with them. Just because you aren't in the same location, it doesn't mean you can't still enjoy the romance!

This article really resonated with me -- especially your points about using technology. My husband deploys overseas and it's very difficult, especially with kids, to span the distance with letters and the occasional phone call. Skype and email makes it much more bearable!

My wife and I spent out first 2 Valentines Days apart when we were dating, with her in England and me in Florida. We used webcams to keep in touch, plus I could call her any time from my cell phone for 1cent a minute, unlimited calls on the cell phone.
