Ways to Cheer Yourself Up

If you are feeling down and are looking for some ways to cheer yourself up, then read the following tips on how you can make yourself feel better.

Call somebody. Whether it be a friend or family member, call someone and talk to them. You don't necessarily have to talk about how you feel. You can ask how their day is going and by possibly getting involved in conversation, you might find your mood start to change and become more uplifted. It always helps to connect with people who you care about and who care about you. If you do want to tell them how you are feeling and you are in need of support, it might help you to know that people are there for you and want to help.

Look for words of inspiration. Whenever I feel down, I sometimes try to look for words that inspire me to change how I am feeling. You could look up inspirational quotes on the internet in a search engine and read them. You could buy a book of inspirational quotes and keep it with you anytime you need some cheering up.

Try to get involved in something. I know that it is sometimes hard when you are feeling down to have the motivation to do something. When you get involved with something, it might take your mind off the negative feelings. Try reading a good book, watching an uplifting movie, taking a walk, making a scrapbook or doing something else creative with your time. It will help to keep your mind occupied and keep you feeling productive, which can help improve your mood.

Listen to music. Music has the ability to change your emotions. Listen to some old songs that you like. Make a music cd of your favorite songs, so that when you are feeling down, you can pop in your music cd and let the music take the blues away.

Help someone. Do you have a relative who needs help with something around the house? How about a neighbor who might need help doing something? Do you know anyone else who might need cheering up? By helping someone else you are taking the focus off of you and it also shows that you are being a good and kind person. That should help to put a smile on your face knowing that you helped someone else and may have put a smile on their face as well.

Write a list of things that you are thankful for. Grab a piece of paper or a journal and write all of the things that you are thankful for. It might help you to feel better knowing that you have these things or people in your life that make you express gratitude for them.

Exercise. Exercise is good for your mind. It also helps you to increase your energy levels. You could walk around the block, jog, do an exercise tape or dance. Whatever gets your body moving should help your mind as well as your body.

Go to a scenic spot near you. Do you have a river or lake nearby your house? Is there a park near you that has pretty trees and grass? Sometimes just sitting in your car or on a bench looking at nature can help to put you in a better mood and calm your mind from negative thoughts.

This too shall pass. Think of that phrase and remember that whatever you are going through, it probably will not last forever. Let it pass quicker by thinking more positively. Do not let your negative thoughts or feelings defeat you and make you feel so down. Pick yourself up and start replacing negative thoughts with more positive ones. Thoughts like "I will get through this", "I am strong", "I've had my time to be down, now it's time for me to pick myself up and feel better and get on with my life."

Volunteer. Volunteer your time for a local charity or spend some time with an elderly person in a nursing home. When you volunteer, you feel better about yourself and what you are doing. It can bring a positive change to your life and your mood.

Try to spend time with someone. Sometimes being alone in your misery can be isolating and make you feel lonely. If you can, try to get out and be around people. Call a friend or family member and see if they want to get together. Being alone can make you feel worse.

Experiment with your looks. Try a new hairstyle. Buy yourself a new outfit. You know the feeling you feel when you are looking your best. See if you can make a few changes to improve yourself on the inside and out.

Do some mind games. Crossword puzzles, video games and trivia games are good at distracting your mind. They require you to think and focus. Maybe you will perfect your gaming skills and that will boost your confidence and make you feel better. Staying busy will give you less time to think about bad things and more time to focus on the good.
