Ways to Control Eating While Dining Out

Kurt Simonsen
Most people who desire to lose weight and get fit can keep themselves in check in their own homes. Here you can establish routines that keep you balanced and on target, as the distractions and temptations are minimized.

But what happens when that same diligent person dines out?

Well, most push aside the rules they have for themselves and instead employ the "it's only one night" philosophy. In essence, they're right, but do that enough and it becomes a problem. Over time you'll no longer see the results you want, as you can train all you want but if the diet is not exactly in line, you may end up feeling dissatisfied.

So, how can you keep yourself in check when going out to catch a meal? It's actually fairly simple and obvious. All it takes is a little forethought, some will power, and a sense of organization.

1. Plan ahead: Before you leave, jump online and check out the menu. Before you enter the establishment, you should know what is there and the choices you need to make. Does this take the thrill out of dining a bit? I guess, if that is what you want. But, even if you have a plan before you go in, you can still have a great meal, and then walk out feeling like you can still slide into those jeans and tuck in a shirt if needed.

2. Avoid loose clothing: This one seems pretty silly, but think about it. If you wear big, baggy shirts or skirts, you'll feel a certain way. However, if you wear the clothes you feel fit in, then you're a walking reminder for yourself to stay on target and make the right dietary decisions.

3. Be regular: Try to keep the same patterns you have every other day of the week. Keep your snacks coming at the same times, and try to plan the dining out at the identical time you'd eat if you weren't headed out. This keeps your body in a routine, and it helps you avoid that starved feeling when you enter a restaurant, which is the first step to overeating.

4. Write it out: Funny thing about the way people work. If you say it to yourself, it's a secret and easily changed if needed. Yet, if you write it down and it's physically in front of you, you somehow feel far more obligated to it. That goes for most goals set in life, so why not make it a part of your eating habits? After looking at the menu at home, write down the food you want and stick to it.

5. Have resolve: Once you sit at the table and the conversation begins flowing, avoid falling into the "a little bit here, a little bit there" method of eating. Don't overindulge with the appetizers, and just say "no" to your friend who continually says to eat "just one more". We all tend to fill our mouths without thinking when distracted by conversation, so just remind yourself about what is going in.

In the end, don't let what the people around you are doing to impact what you do. If they are throwing down the cheese fries and cheesecake, refrain and keep to our plan. You'll feel better about yourself when you walk out of the restaurant not only because you have kept your body fit, but also because you have stayed true to your convictions.
