Ways to Cut Office Costs

Smart business owners who need to trim the bottom line should look for ways to cut office costs before cutting out employees. Economic downturns, surprises in your particular market and unforeseeable disasters can cause upheaval in a business. There are several smart ways to cut office expenses; these may help you save money and jobs. Put these suggestions to use and start chopping away at extra costs effectively.

Review Kitchen Costs

The cost of those disposable foam coffee cups and plastic stirrers can really add up. Banish this "disposable" income and save some money. Consider buying cheaper coffee and tea and ask employees to bring their own cups from home. Cut out or cut back on the occasional employee lunches. Review the cost of kitchen supplies like napkins and coffee filters. Purchase cheaper items if you can.

Electricity

Electric bills are a huge "cash-suck" from any business. Ask employees to shut down and unplug equipment like computers, printers and copiers. Replace air filters in your AC and heating units to save on your monthly bill. Swap out incandescent lights for longer lasting, cheaper fluorescent lights. While more expensive on the outset, fluorescent lights can reduce your power bill by a large margin. Set the office temperature at 72 and use a regulator to keep hands from moving the thermostat.

Paper Costs

Do away with antiquated fax machines, use email faxing instead. Email faxing will allow your office staff to review any incoming faxes and choose which ones are worthy of a print job. Use inexpensive copy paper like recycled paper for inner office memos and unofficial letters.

Credit Card Check

Review what is hitting your business credit card every month. Programs and services not being used should be eliminated. For example, unused website hosting, gym memberships for employees and magazine subscriptions should all be cut.

Get your company back in the black by cutting away non-essential spending.
