Ways for Cutting the Cost of Electricity in Your Home

Daniel Rein
The cost of electricity is rising each year and for some people, the costs have simple gotten out of hand. Most people have Con Edison which seems to have a monopoly on the electrical industry. This allows the company to fluctuate prices as it sees fit. It fact, many Americans got an unfair deal this past summer as temperatures rose while electric and heating bills stayed the same. This past winter witnessed some of the hottest days ever recorded for the month of December and January. As a result, people used less heat and appliances. However, Americans did not see the drop in the cost of heat and electric like they were supposed to get.

Still, what many Americans fail to realize is that when it comes to electricity, the increase in electrical appliance and gadgets in homes take up a tremendous amount of electricity. For instance, most people have computers in their homes which do up a lot of electricity. In addition, Ipods have been increasing in sales each year which take up even more electricity because you need to plug it in to get a full battery for power. The same concept applies to cell phones, DVD players, televisions, etc.

The American people have gotten lazier and fatter as studies have shown due to a lack of exercise. This translates into more television watching or listening to music more instead of working out or going for a walk. When people ask me, "how can I save money on spiraling electric bills?" I always tell them to look carefully at their lifestyle. Some people do not want to sacrifice the gadgets that make their life more enjoyable. However, unless the usage of electrical and technical devices is cut back, the prices for electric bills will only increase each month.

Of course, the other ideas for saving electricity are very basic yet they save electricity and money nevertheless. When you are not in a particular room in the house, turn the lights off. If you aren't using your computer because you are going outside to do errands or are meeting with family and friends, turn off your computer. These simple yet basic things people often forget. You can also reduce the wattage of your light bulbs in the house. The lower the wattage for the light bulbs, the less electricity a lamp uses. When you leave the house, make sure that you shut off all lights and appliances in the house. In addition, you can wear warmer clothes in the house like a sweatshirt if you feel cold, instead of turning on the heat.
