Ways to Dodge the Winter Blues

Lori Piper
Olivia Newton John asks have you even been mellow. However, what if more people asked if you have ever been S.A.D. (seasonal affective disorder)?

If you find yourself having two or more of the following symptoms, check with your primary care physician to determine if you could be S.A.D.

Oversleeping
Daytime fatigue
Difficulty concentrating
Carbohydrate cravings
Inability to have fun

Having these symptoms does not automatically mean you are S.A.D.: be sure and talk with your doctor.

With my sister having moved to Maine, and facing her second winter there, I researched ways to assist her beating the winter blues. It is very discombobulating having it become dark at four o' clock in the afternoon.

Can we beat away the winter blues with a stick? That would hurt, and I am not a fan of self-mutilation. However, here are six ways to combat the winter blues, possibly the result of having seasonal affective disorder.

Ways to dodge winter blues- be fishy

A diet high in fish is attributed with keeping the spirits up of the Eskimo population during these long dark days.

Ways to dodge winter blues- morning walks

Fight off the blahs and the blues with an early morning walk. It works to set off depressive moods at the pass.

Ways to dodge winter blues- rice, please

The B vitamins in brown rice help to regulate brain chemistry to increase happiness. Now if only it was as easy to cook every single time as white rice.

Ways to dodge winter blues- furniture revamp

Sunlight is necessary for us all and can boost our joyous moods. Relocate chairs and sofas to be closer to the windows during these winter months.

Ways to dodge winter blues-wake up happy

High tech alarm clocks can simulate dawn. Rather than a loud beep or buzz, the light slowly increases, awakening us with light, not noise.

Ways to dodge winter blues- air today and tomorrow

The use of an ion generator or a salt lamp thirty minutes daily can decrease S.A.D. symptoms by fifty percent.

Ways to dodge winter blues- catchy tunes

Chose your favorite upbeat music and keep it playing in the background. Favorite songs can always make us want to sing and dance along. If you keep it playing in the kitchen, you can sing along as you prepare dinner. If your garage is off your kitchen, as you enter into the house, you will hear it. Anytime you go for your second cup of coffee, tea, cocoa, or soda you can be rewarded with a happy little verse that will remain with you.

Yes, I know having a song stuck in your head, can be irritating, that is why I am encouraging you to choose your favorites.
